For all you people questioning this: do you know that the Evo RS comes standard with this bar? Why? Probably because it helps with rigidity. These trunk bars are anywhere from $60-$100. He did it for about $6. Good job, Rob!

Sorry, but I had to resurrect this thread from the dead. I can't believe how many people are spending $60+ on trunk bars. Not only is this one <$10, but it looks much nicer when you're done.

Plus, I like to pat myself on the back from time to time.

Rob,

I'm so glad you brought this thread back up. I remember seeing it long time ago but have not been able to find it.

Question, since the ebay link from the original post is dead, did you buy a front strut bar like this one originally?

Thanks...

He said a rear strut bar for the 02 and up lancer not the front one. I've seen this on the RS and thought it was neat. My 03 evo just has a slot for it. A good job in salvaging the strut bar for something useful!

not seeing how this would be in anyway beneficial, but if put it there, they must've done some research about it.....anyone

I understand the basic principle, that being it's harder to bend something with steel rods bolted to it, and bending the body is not desirable. However, I do wonder how much of an area the load is spread over with those two bolts. I wonder if that area is reinforced somehow just as one would reinforce the attachement points of a roll cage.

i believe the trunk bar is bolted up the the actual frame of the car, and imo, it's to keep the frame from spreading out away from each other more so than bending into each other(just like the under bars in the front suspension). if you look around the trunk floor, notice how it's glued on, not much of a support other than holding your spare and cargo. with that said, i like to add support bars anywhere i can, might not notice any differences on a car that's just couple of years old, but it really helped on my previous car, being 16 years old and daily driven for 8 years straight, i can actually hear the flexing on it, added some strut bars just before i sold her and 90% of the noise was gone. i would like to keep my evo for just as long, if not longer.

The factory trunk bar is bolted to the rear part of the Evo's body as shown in the pictures in begining of this thread. It is not bolted to the frame. It's to add some rigidity to the rear of our cars. I do agree with your logic of joining the frame together. Our cars are of a unibody design from what I've seen.

You want the rear strut bar for a '02+ Lancer (not EVO). It'll bolt up perfectly to the trunk bar points on the EVO. Here's a link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/02-05...70545364QQrdZ1

Use the bar, end links, and bolts, then throw away the nuts and the two brackets.

It's $6, but unfortunately they now screw you for $16 shipping. But still, even at $22, I personally think it looks much better than the RS bar, is probably stronger, and is under half the price.

I paid $30 for the RS bar at the dealer. That's only a $8 difference.
