Another AVIC F install w/ Scosche dash *pics*

Installation took about an hour from start to finish, aside from all of the wiring harness soldering BS and having to pull the head unit back out because I forgot to plug something in.

For anyone who does this - do yourself a favor and remove all of the black plastic clips that come on the Scosche unit and replace them with the nice white nylon clips that are on the stock unit. It makes the dash piece easier to remove once it's in, and the nylon bits are MUCH nicer than the crappy plastic ones that come on the Scosche.

I mounted the microphone in the map light above the shifter because that's where the factory bluetooth mic goes, and it sounds great. I also just stuck the GPS antenna on the top of the head unit and it works just fine through the dash.

Looking good! Did you have the SSS system? Also I like your custom menus. I agree about the plastic clips. I actually drilled 2 screws through the bottom of the scosche kit into the dash to help hold it really tight and flush.

Also what shift knob is that?

Very nice job. I just did this myself this weekend. I ran the GPS antenna up to the top of the window through the a-pillar and mounted it behind the rear view mirror.

I haven't done anything as far as customizing the icons like you did but that looks really sweet! I'll have to look into that some more.

Question for you, have you had a chance to mess around with voice recognition? I haven't really looked into it, but it's certainly not as straight forward as the stock unit.

It's the factory optional shift knob. It came in the car from the dealer, it also has the factory optional e-brake handle.

I have only used the voice recognition to call people, not really for anything else yet. It worked pretty good.

I hear a lot of complaints about the AVIC F Series units. How well does it work for you? I hear lots of issues, and you need to modify the unit to make it usable at all.

those custom menus are very cool tho..

instead of making a new thread im gonna ask in here.

Where did you or anyone else purchase the Scosche dash kit from?? I called 3 places in my town and they don't have them. The one guy that was supposed to get it for me said he called 2 of his dealers and there out of stock. He said he can get the Metra but i don't want it. I have my Kenwood DNX7140 just chilling in my house and i want to install in with my other stuff. Also how much did you guys get it for?

Thanks!

Looks great by the way!

ONLINE! On ebay they are about 40 bucks, or just google search it, might be cheaper yet. Here, I searched for it, this seems to be the least expensive:

You don't need to mod it. The only mods I've done are graphic mods. If you have the 1.0 version the boot times are really slow I guess, but the 2.0 firmware fixes that issue. I read a lot of stuff too, but I got mine for $400 (I think Newegg has them for $430 right now) and for that it's a steal. Before this I had an AVIC-D1, which cost me $1500 when it was new, and it doesn't do half the **** this does. I think people just expect too much out of it.

Boot up time is around 15-20 seconds before it starts playing music, and around 30-40 seconds before you can actually start using it. In my TSX (the car I had before this) I had a carputer and it'd take that long to start up, so I'm used to it. I don't think 30-40 is too bad considering the thing runs Windows.

I thought the stock unit looked like a pile of ****. You can press on the front of it and hear the thin plastic flex and crack. I thought the Scosche unit looked better than the Metra one... everywhere I read about that one says it fits like crap... and it was $30, so I got it. I don't think it looks too bad.

You have to either get a different amp (ideally a 5 channel) OR you can get a Metra MITO-02 adapter and run all of the stock stuff with that. They're about $130 on eBay, come with some good instructions, and are really easy to hook up. I'll be selling mine when I get the rest of my gear and don't require the factory wiring/amp/speakers anymore... which will hopefully be within the next few months.

^ I think there is even a way to change the red/blue GPS arrow to a picture of your car. I think you need a certain image file of the top view of your car. I saw it posted somewhere on AVIC-411.

No you aren't the only one. IMO the Metra and Schosche kits look like something an amateur fabricated out of fiberglass (you can see the gaps top just left of the top right corner of the kit in the last pic above). I have the JDM double-din kit and it looks much cleaner & it does cost alot of money but I didn't want my $40K car to have a $30 dash kit that looked like a $30 dash kit.
