So the turbo doesnt hit full boost until about 5000rpm? That sucks since we red line at 7000rpm. By the time it spools up, we have to shift? What good is that?

Here is a good comparison of the Stock Turbo vs a 35R Evolution X. You will see at 4800rpm they both make the same power, but the 35R keeps pulling past red line.

Thanks,

Michael

Nice comparison chart there, basically past 5k the advantage of a larger turbo is clear. I guess if you spend most of your time at 3-5k it's not the best "street" turbo but if you really want to shift through the gears you will be in the 5-7k range or 6-8k depending on rev limits and power bands, perfect for racing and probably fine for the street if you can downshift to bring the RPM's up.

Where is 4800 rpm on that graph? Also why the big difference in the low end between race gas and pump gas?
It is hard to tell which is which with the colors and the text.

Looks like for the race gas high boost run they started ~10 mph later which is why initial low boost power is less. These seem to be 3rd gear pulls so the 1000 rpm's = roughly 10 mph on the chart. Pretty amazing how much extra torque the car gains from the race gas with more boost and more advanced timing.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I think this would be beneficial to the community.
Have we determined whether it was the plugs or coil packs acting up at that time?

I'm running into a very similar situation and wonder if it is the same problem, my ignition setup is NGK race plugs (heat range 9), stock coil packs and Coltspeed ignition booster:

here is something that i think everyone could benefit from,
i recently tuned an evo x over here with an fp red, cosworth head, kelford 214b cams, and the regular bolt ons (intercooler+piping/ tbe / walbro/ 1100cc fic injectors etc) and the car ran amazingly well and made 458whp 39x of torque...at 30psi on pump...the owner wanted me to push it more in a more aggressive map for his drag racing, i suggested we swap his stock spark plugs as they were due, i had some HKS MX40's at my shop (one step colder /heat range 8) so we threw them in and first thing i noticed was a couple of misfires everywhere above 6500rpms..pulled the plugs out regapped all to .022" and put them back in, and that did the trick..leaned it out a bit and pulled 480whp out this baby!! almost forgot....the car is running stock coils...am hoping to run the sparktechs on it soon!

** HKS PLUGS WE HAVE USED CAME UNGAPPED AND NEED REGAPPING

i thought it was common practice to check/gap the plugs before running them...either way, great findings!

I also use the hks mx40s no problems with them at all. Just need to gap them to specs as mine came gapped in the .30s.
