Evo X ETS HTA86 91 Octane Mustang Dyno

Hello,

I have been tuning this car at the shop and trying to get some bugs sorted out and finally got everything worked out.

Now this car was acting strange from the get go. The car started life with the twin scroll HTA86 with a .78 on the backside. The car would spool stupid fast but after 18-19psi the car would get way backed up and you can see it in the curve as it would start to U.

So after talking with ETS we went with just a single scroll .82 T3. The spool is slower for sure but it woke way up in terms of power!!

Now I ran into another problem that I would like to share with the rest of the community as I dont know if anyone else has run into it.

I could do pulls when the car is cold and it would pull fine and make pretty solid power, around 390 on 22psi. But once the car started to get hot it would fall on its face. I boost leaked checked, ran over everthing and I just could not figure out what was going on.

When I was doing pulls it would feel like the power band was "light". It just felt like a misfire but it didnt really sound like it. So to just to test my paranoia I put the stock coils and the stock plugs in and bam! The car went from falling on its face at 360 to 454 in just one pull!

I didnt run a test to determine if it was the plugs or the coils but my guess is the coils. They acted like the dwell was too long and heat was saturating the coils. Sometime in the future I want to put them on the O scope and measure it but that is for another day.

This is back to back between the Okada coils and the stock Evo X coils.

Anyways here is the mod list:

Evo X GSR
Stock Block
DW 1000cc Inj
91 pump fuel
ETS HTA86 Turbo Kit
Cobb AP
FMIC
Custom Intake and UICP
Kelford Cams-Stage 1

I may be missing something but you get the idea.

This is really high for our dyno. Normally Evo X's with 35r's do around 420hp-430 max. This HTA really screams!

Thanks for reading,

Nice results man, congrats.

I have heard other people run into problems when switching out the OEM spark plugs and coils. For now I would say everyone should leave them in until sparktech releases their stuff.

I have the Okadas on my car...no evidence that they've hindered me at my current power level but I'm certainly not making more power than other X's.

The next time I have my car tuned (turbo upgrade) I'm going to swap them and see. I swapped the HKS plugs out for stock since I had some weirdness ever since I installed them.

Nice Job!

FYI: we have ran the stock plugs/coils with an hta86 up to 38psi on vp import utilizing an omni 4-bar map sensor and stock ecu with 0 problems.

Gap between .020-.022.

May I ask how much boost on that pull? 465whp.

That's some good power. Look's like the coils could have been the problem the whole time. Here is a very similar graph from TTP that compares the HTA3586 T3 .78 A/R vs FP RED (25 psi)

Both cars are making crazy power. Nice tune Mitch!!

93 Octane
Kelford 214A Cams
25 psi
ETS Intercooler
ETS Twin Scroll HTA3586 T3 Turbo Kit

Thanks,

Michael

The top end power looks great for racing, but for a daily driver the boost not coming on strong until almost 5000 rpm would be rough. Basically a stock Evo X with Mivec tuning will hit 225 ft/lbs by 3300 rpm's, my GT30 lags a bit until 3800 rpm and this turbo looks to hit that torque level at 4800 for comparison.

Still nice power considering only 91 octane though!

It was the Okada coils with the HKS MX40 spark plugs. I dont really do HKS anything so I apologize if that is the wong spark plug, although I am pretty sure that is correct.

I think your problem could be the plugs if they are not gapped down properly, I had misfire with my HKS plugs before when I didn't gap them.
