Yeah, unfortunately I have to agree. The peaky power band resembles a boosted Honda motor. Someone else said 'it's so you can have 500 whp on the street on pump gas...' I think Evos are excellent at providing huge, usable powerbands even on pump gas. It reminds me of a high hp Honda S2000 powerband.

Ha ha, some people mentioned it already. Looks like my roommate's turbo S2000 powerband, just a little lower
He's running a huge Borg Warner T4 turbo though, good for like 750whp or something like that.
Good numbers! I'm sure on the street it will load up more and spool up lower.
Help an EVO newb out please, SD? I'm guessing speed density?
Is there a way to run the EVO ECU based on the MAP sensor only and not worry about the silly MAF running out? Is that what you're talking about?
I hate MAFs personally, just seems more straightforward to run MAP only and not have to worry as much about leaks and BOV's venting to atmosphere.

Nice! Anything special in the ECU to set that up? I'll be using ECUflash on my car, got the Openport 2 coming, should be here tomorrow. Do you need to patch something or just tweak settings to ignore the MAF?

Because of where it makes peak torque. Torque x rpm/5252 = hp, so after 5252rpm the torque will drop and the horsepower goes up. Since this makes peak power at 8,000 when we look at the math (and dyno sheet for that matter) we see it makes 321 ft lbs.
Your friends car is probably on a Green or something like that? It would spool 1000rpm sooner or more, make peak torque in the 4,000 range and peak power maybe mid 6,000r?
Let's say 6500 for peak power. This means at 6500 it makes 323 ft lbs there (for instance) where this car is making 349ish ft lbs and is still climbing in power toward redline.

torque in any boosted car is related to spool and boost level. If you spool to 25psi on two setups but one is later in the rpm band (1000rpms later for instance) you could have the same torque level or lower on the slower spooling one. The trade off is sustained torque which lasts out to redline and doesn't drop off like the stock turbo for instance. If you can hold torque, HP increases with RPM.
The way to get more torque is to run higher boost or add displacement to add in spool to gain "peak torque" back.
You really shouldn't look at peak, its all about torque across the powerband and the "meat" of it.
Bigger turbos do flow more air at lower RPM's (more air, more potential power/torque)so its not always how I have portrayed it but in generality it is.
Edit: took a phone call at work while typing this, Aaron beat me to it, lol. His answer is essentially the same thing, maybe a bit more technical
