I like sirius a lot better than XM. The overpass thing does suck but it is common to any satellite receiver.

Does anyone know if Sirius is still going to do a merger w/XM? I thought it was suppose to have happened already.

I'm not the purest audiophile out there, but IMO you don't have to be to hear the problem with it. I have the SSS Rockford system, and Sirius sounds like a realplayer audio stream over a slow internet connection. Its just compressed to the point of ridiculousness, like MP3s at a bit rate of 64kbps or so. It gives you ear fatigue almost immediately if you turn the volume up past 16 or so.

FM sounds better. CD sounds infinitely better. I will not be re-upping when the free trial period runs out.

My friends have sirius. Each has a different setup.
A. Tuned the radio to 88.7(or w/e it is) to pick up the radio.
Horrid sound.
B. Uses the tape deck connected to the rieciver.
Not bad, but still low quality.
C. Has the riecever connected into his antena jack. (Split with stock)
Radio quality IMO.
D.(Me) I find that my Sirius sounds great! The hard rock stations are fine. I mostly listen to the techno stations at night and normal radio in the morning. The techno sounds as if it was on a cd I ripped. I have not gone louder than 25 on any thing.

When I drive the radio is usualy set to 16 or lower.

Is the sound high quality?.. No...This is a stock setup. If you want amazing sound you have to get speakers and a headunit that is up to par. Infinty Cappas are a nice upgrade. If I were to upgrade. IMO the Stock system is amazing for a Mitsu stock system. I was impressed with it. I was expecting some Bose sounding POS system.

My grip with the satelite radio is they lack of popular songs. Yes I enjoy hearing new music but I like some songs I know thrown into the mix.
I am still considering getting it just for the techno stations. I could never fit enough techno on to 6mp3 cds. Plus I want some real music too!

Overall I'd give Sirius a 6/10 .
I dont listen to Stern or Bubba..(all my friends do). If I did Sirius would be a must.

I've had Sirius in my Evo VIII for three years, hardwired into an Apline head unit and Alpine speakers all around with a JL Audio subwoofer in the trunk. I also have XM radio in my Honda Element, running through the factory headunit with upgraded (Polks) speakers. Both are similar in sound quality -- that is, they are generally poor. The comparison to a MP3 player playing songs at a low bit rate is a valid one because that is exactly what they are doing: compacting the music signal so they can cram as many channels as possible into their respective line ups over the frequency bandwidths they have been assigned.

When the satellite services first started, they promised "near-CD quality sound". Notice they said "near", which implies -- correctly -- that is it not nearly as good as a CD. Even a high-quality FM signal is better than satellite with respect to dynamic range and overall fidelity. Unfortunately, most FM radio stations crank up the gain and compress the signal greatly, leaving over the air FM radio sound in a woefully sorry state.

So, satellite radio will not match a good FM signal and pale in comparison to a CD. It will sound shallow, compressed, and unsastifying. This is the way that it is, unfortunately. But it's not unlistenable and a decent car system can make the most of the sorry signal that it receives. I listen to Sirius and XM all the time as we all know what a wasteland of musical originality and diversity FM radio has become. Clear Channel has given us Classic Rock with forty minutes of commercials in every hour, turning FM into a mockery of what it used to be. For that, XM and Sirius are a godsend for somebody that likes to listen to a variety of music. I know that arguments rage between fans of either service (Sirius is more hits focused, whereas XM has deeper playlists) but for me, I can usually find something I enjoy listening to without being assaulted by Stairway to Heaven for the millionth time.

Sirius and XM have petitioned the FCC for a merger as both are losing money bashing each other for customers. The decision is supposed to be made any day now with most pundits predicting approval. We shall see.

If you use FM MOD that comes with sirius you are only getting MONO sound.. Hardwiring L/R audio output to an L/R input will always yield better results.

Too bad for you. Comes through great and sounds just as good as MP3's in my Evo! Also my Sony deck has an audio jack in the front so no fuzz with the FM transmitter.

I have the S-50 which has the ability to record songs you hear on Sirius and play them whenever you want. I can also go back through the songs I've been listening to for the last 40 hours or so. I usually go through and save anything I missed. Its great because my boss always renews my subscription, so I get all the new stuff as soon as it comes out.

Sound quality this way wasn't the best but their are places that sell wiring harnesses that you can wire the sirius radio right in to your factory radio or even aftermarket ones. As for the X with the sirius built right in that sucks I was looking forward to it when I get mine....

P.S. Howard not so much... But BTLS or the bubba the love sponge show now we are talking! lol
+1
I've had Sirius for about 2yrs now and I'm still loving every min of it. Though there are some commercials on certain channels and others have no commercials. Would never go back to terrestrial radio unless I have to.

Sirius is better in terms of music selection, and XM has much better coverage/signal. However there is a reason for that. XM actually uses ground units to strengthen their signal especially in heavily populated areas. However, its just as bad if you end up going out into the country. Now once they finally merge it will be the best of both worlds, however I don't know if their prices will stay as low if they do...

I had both sirius and XM and as for as quality of music goes, they were the same. So, do not bash on just sirius...

Also, I would have to say it sounds like an equipment problem more then a problem on sirius end.

(but cd does sound better, what did you expect?)

I expected at least FM quality, and its not. The compression is so awful it makes me wince. Its especially noticeable on bands that have high vocal ranges, like Coheed. The poor guys voice just becomes a muddled sound. It also sucks that every time I go under a bridge, I lose Sirius. Its quality is about on par with AM radio, and cuts out just as often.

Too much compression is used. The quality is on par with 64k for music and 32k for talk channels.

The only way to get near CD quality is to listen to it online by paying an additional 2.99 a month.

I disconnected my service months ago....waste of time if your an audiophile.

The electronic stations are pretty good and sound ok..the rock and hip hop sounds bad I think (don't listen to that much)...though "The System" on XM radio had some better progressive house. How come they don't offer the option of XM on the NAVI? kind of lame. The quality of Sirius compared to the CD/HD quality is obviously worse. The bass is ok on Sirius on Area 33, Boombox, and that other one.

Is there a rumor that they are merging? that would own really hard. Getting The system from XM and the other stuff from Sirius would be the shizzle me nizzle.
