Aftermarket Speakers without an amp, worth upgrade?

I currently have a GSR non SSS package....the stereo is bone stock except for a Pioneer DEH-2200UB head unit....I'm not a huge audio geek but I just had to get a head unit....its because the Pioneer comes standard with the front USB jack and I found it on sale for like $90 brand new....so I just couldn't pass up

Anyway I like how the head unit performs with the stock speakers....but I can tell as I start to crank up the volume, the stock speakers can't handle it....is it worth it for me to upgrade to aftermarket speakers all around, WITHOUT using an external amp? I heard its bad to under/over power speakers....and I'll be running off the head unit only...no external amp since I don't want to drop alot of money into the audio side

Let me know of any suggestions if it is worth upgrading the factory speakers....

Also is there any how tos for installation of speakers? Thanks!

With a head unit aftermarket speakers will sound alot better than stock. Plus you can always add an amp later. If you are not planing on adding an amp then I wouldn't spend too much on speakers. You wont get the full potential out of nice speakers.

since you asked for cheap speakers i know of some that work great iwth an aftermarket head unit in our lancers.

^for the front.

^ for the rear.

i put these into my brothers 2008 es and they sound great for the price.

For installation i would take the stock paper speakers and cut them out, use the plastic ring that mounts into the door to mount the new speakers.

Simply mount the speakers o the plastic ring (after you cut/dremel out the paper speaker what is left is the plastic ring) using screws or whatever you desire (i used screws)

and then put the speaker back in place just like they did when they were OEM.

This is how i did it for my brothers 2008 lancer es.

You will need a drill, a dremel with a couple of attachments and some goggles and a little bit of creativity.

what happens if my speakers come with an adapter ring already? then I wouldn't have to deal with any cutting right? Just bolt on and go?

I plan to get these from crutchfield

It says it already comes with speaker harnesses and speaker brackets

Personally, I think I'd just start out with a reasonably priced set of name brand components for the fronts.. maybe something between $100 - $200, and preferably with a high sensitivity (close to 90dB) and modest power handling (maybe 80RMS or less). Enjoy that for awhile, and then in the future buy a set of matching brand / series co-axes for the back and then later maybe buy a 4 or 5 channel 50 to 75RMS/ch amp..

..or as an even cheaper route, keep the rear stock (powered by the head unit) and just add a 2 channel amp for the new front components. Your fronts will be louder that way, which should improve staging and imaging of the sound, and hey - why waste money on sound equipment for passengers that aren't even worthy of riding shotgun, lol.

Good luck!

the components i listed are 88dB sensitivity and 60RMS power and only cost 60.00 that seems pretty good to me.

the speaker brackets that come with the speakers are made to fit any car, thus it may not be as simple as bolt and go, the brackets were not fabricated specifically for a 2010 evo x so yea there may be some modification needed.

oh boy. I bought coaxial Alpine Type-R for the rears, and have component Alpine Type-R for the fronts. They're all 6.5"--however the magnets look... HUGE. I hope I can get them to fit!
