MITO-02 almost caught fire
MITO-02 almost caught fire
So I finally accumulated all the parts needed to install my car pc and set about installing it. I was using a Mito-02 to interface with the stock RF system. Before I finished the install I had to leave, so at this point the only thing that I had done was remove the stock stereo, ran a few wires (but not connected to anything), and plugged in the Mito-02.
I started the car and began to smell something burning. Well I look into the hole in the dash (where the stereo was) and see a little bit of smoke
Quickly shut off the car and look in the hole to see that the Mito-02 was smoking, so I quickly unplug it. Really glad I hadn't finished the install otherwise I wouldn't have been able to see what was smoking.
Here are the pictures. Btw, that 4 pin connector in the middle was originally white. At this point I'm really skeptical at installing another one, but it seems like there's not really any other options. Anyone else ever hear of this?

Wow.. glad you caught it in time!
And ya, Metra makes crap. They can't even make a proper fitting dash kit for our car, so I'm not surprised their OEM interface is junk as well.
Unfortunately, they're the only ones making such an interface that I know of.. at least this is the only time I've ever heard of one having a melt-down.

I got this wired yesterday and this morning I smelled something burning in my dash, unfortunately I had already mounted the Scosche dash after testing it for a little while last night, it seemed to work fine. Anyway, Ill check when I get home, hopefully its not as bad as the pic you posted, were they able to replace it for free?

Metra replaced my mine and it did it again, so I figured out the problem. Here:
Just hard wire the two yellow wires, one from head unit and one from power side of MITO-02 to each other, that bypasses the box completely, it doesn't actually need that wire ran into it. The aftermarket head draws too much current for the circuit board and melts it. I've been running this way with zero issues, and thats WITH the burned out circuit board still in it
it's not! Mine did the exact same thing
