Speaker and amp recommendations needed
Speaker and amp recommendations needed
Hey everyone I need some recommendations on speakers and amps for my sss evo.
I will be replacing the headunit with a pioneer x930bt. I also will be retaining the oem sub. I am looking for good sound quality with a bit more punch than the oem rockford system. I listen to about everything but country and gospel.I will list what I have in mind so far.
Amps
Jl audio xd700/5 or xd600/6
Alpine pdx5
Speakers front
Hertz hsk165(like how they sound but a bit spendy at $450)
Focal 165vr (Have not listened to them but more reasonable priced)
Focal 165vb(same as above)
Morel Tempo6(same as above but have good reviews)
any other recommendations?
I had Boston Pros for almost 8 years prior and loved them btw
Rear speakers
stock
Hertz dsk165
Recommendations?
I am not sure if I should run the rear speakers from the deck and bridge the fronts or just amp them all. Any and all advice will be appreciated. Like I said my main goal is good sound quality. I will eventually replace the sub but for now want the stock.
Thanks again

I have a recommendation - Rockford Fosgate T3652-s 6.5-Inch Pair of T3 Component Speakers. The cones are made of Liquid Crystal Polymer! 500 Watt between the Tweeters and Mids. Theses speakers will never disappoint you. I love them! Amp all your speakers for best sound quality and Sound Dampen your Roof-Floor-Doors-Trunk-Dash-Ect... Theses speakers are High quality and you will need to take in effect the elements. Use Baffles and Weather stripping to protect your speakers from water / moisture. Rope Calk can be used to ensure your mids are Air tight against your door and to get the best sound quality possible. Another thing to take in effect is Using MDF for your spacer. MDF is a material that does not react well to moisture _ Be aware!_ You can always wrap your spacer in Dampening material to help with resonates and act as a barrier for moisture.
Hope this helped- cky_2k

I replaced my speakers with Rockford Fosgate (Power) components for the front and 2-way Rockford Fosgate (Punch) for the rear doors. I stayed with the Rockford theme because I originally had the Rockford package in my car. Plus, im a fan of Rockford. You might have to build speaker spacers and/or widen the speaker mounting holes in the doors. I only had to do it for my front doors because the magnets were big. So it will depend on the depth and the size of the magnets.
MDF is fine to use for speaker spacers. As long as you keep moisture out, they will be fine. They also make moisture resistant MDF. Its green. You probably wont find that at your local Home Depot or Lowes. You might have to special order that at a lumber yard.
I didnt upgrade my amp and sub, but ill be using Rockford for them also. Rockford isnt the "best", but its not bad either. Alot of it is just preference. Anything is better than buying speakers and stuff at Walmart.

I think the choices you've already listed seem pretty good..
Definitely get a small, lightweight amp.
Focal, Hertz & Morel all make excellent speakers.. for the rears, I think I'd probably just get the coax version in the same make & series as the front components. Should match up a little better that way.
Personally, I'm gonna go for a small amp like the PDX and probably either Alpine Type R or Polk MM all around, simply because they use lightweight frames & neodymium magnets.
Also, instead of the Alpine PDX-5.. maybe look at their new 5-channel PDX-V9. It's about $100 more, but it jumps the power from 75x4 +300RMS to 100x4 +500RMS, and the S/N ratio has improved from 76dBA to 94dBA. Think there was some other improvements, as well.
It's supposed to be hitting stores around March.

i am really leaning towards the focal 165vr, I am wondering if they would fit with a spacer. looks like the mounting depth is 2 7/8" top and 3" bottom.
Also are the alpine amps in the same league as the xd series of amps? I am looking for clean sounding amp.
Thanks again

The XD 5-channel amps have a signal-to-noise ratio of 84dBA @ 1-watt, where-as the old PDX 5-channel was only 76dBA. The new PDX-V9 wins in my opinion.. having more power and a 94dBA S/N ratio. Then again, I have no idea if JL has plans for any revised XD models for this year.
And yeah, the Focal Polyglass series is a good choice.. I ran Polyglass coaxials for a few years and really enjoyed them. My only complaint, was that they seemed to lack in the lower mids around 60 to 80Hz. High-passed at 80Hz sounded great, but even with a sub, I would have preferred my fronts to reach down closer to 60Hz.
Then again, the Polyglass series are only rated down to 70Hz.. I would probably pick the Hertz Hi-Energy HSK165 with the HCX165 for the rears. Both are rated down to 50Hz at 100RMS.
Also, keep in mind that alot of my opinions are just based on specs.. definitely go with whatever sounds best to your ears, if you have a chance to listen to anything you're considering.
And whatever you do, be sure to seal up the doors!

thanks for the help, unfortunately thats the problem. We don't have any audio places that carry any of the above brands except Hertz, and they are asking a bit too much for my liking. Although I did like the sound of the hi energy
send a email to eric@autowerksracing.com and he can help you out with any questions with the hertz audio stuff.
thanks man, seems like hertz has a lot good reviews. I am located in South Dakota. I think I am down to three choices now Hertz hi energy, Morel tempo 6, and the Hybrid unity. But the latter two I will never be able to test them out. I have to rely on youtube and reviews.
ok guys I think I may have finalized the parts tell me what you think.
amp I am doing the jl xd700/5 (which amp kit would I need 4wg ?)
as for speakers I am between two set ups.
1. Hertz Hi enegery hsk165 for the fronts and stock rear ($450)
2. ID csx64 front and ctx 65 rear ($300)
Is the hertz worth that much over the ID's. I have not listened to them but the reviews seem good and price is spot on
Let me know thanks
