Evo 8 MR Coolant Gauge

Hello all, I just got a 2005 evo mr. The MR center panel coolant temp gauge doesn't work. It has power/ground and it does turn on, but needle doesn't move. I found the two wires that go to the engine bay area broken at the fender liner.

can anyone tell me where the coolant temperature wires connect to? From the gsuge to where? Do they splice into the stock ect sensor?

thanks

If there are the 2 broken wires in the engine bay, is the other part right there?
I can't remember exactly how it was setup but you should be able to find the other half of the wires.

unforunately i don't see the wires laying there or anything unplugged. I just got the car so not sure what it's been through. Thinking worse case I'll run an aftermarket sensor that goes inline of a rad hose and hook it up to that

I think the sensor is in the side of the coolant exit neck below the thermostat. I added a second one above the thermostat for a second gage.

I think it only has one wire to it, the ground is through the block. There is a small round brass button on a stem on the top of the sensor. Connector is small black plastic rectangle that slides on from the side. A flat 1/4 female spade connector will fit it also if connector is missing.

Do a scan and see if your ECU is getting a temp reading. I am thinking there may be two sensors one for the gauge and another for the ECU. It is possible there is only one. If ECU is not getting temp you may be in some limp mode and hurting performance or mileage.

My instrument cluster gauge works. The gauge that isn't working is the single din coolant temp gauge that came with the MR trim. Is the sensor you are referring to for the gauge cluster?

I have an RS it came with the same 3 gauge set as the MR.

Read the gauge again, it is temp but it is "Oil" temp not water.

You are missing the integrated "Oil Temp Oil Drain Plug" .

This is a one wire system that ran to a special Oil Drain Plug. Check your oil drain plug and see if it has a swivel wire on it. If so that is the wire you need to connect your gage to. Bad news is that there are no replacement's sold from Mitsubishi even when the cars were new.

You could find the Ohm range and find some "Oil Temp Sender" with compatibles specs. I still have mine but I moved it to sandwich adapter on oil filter to stop it from dangling and making a mess.

Thanks! I actually just realized it was an oil temp gauge 2 days ago, that would explain things LOL.

The wire is broke at the sensor for the oil drain plug. I doubt that ill be able to pull it out of there and repin it, but could be worth a shot at the next oil change.

If it's a 1 wire sensor then i assume the other wire gets grounded near the sensor somewhere? I am thinking of trying one of these Chinese 1/8 npt sensors they have an amazon or an aem oil temp sensor, I'm not sure how well they will read since they can't be calibrated and I don't know the resistance spec for the oem sensor.

The ground is through the engine block ground, sensor screws into metal.

I think it is likely a standard resistance so aftermarket should work but I don't know what ohm range.
