WORKS drop in filter or AEM cold air intake?

Hey all, I am looking at some upgrades for my Evo, and I was wondering what would be the better choice?

Pros of the WORKS: the price and the stock air box.

Neither of those are a deciding factor for me at the moment, so what would be the better upgrade?
I'm also planning on picking up a Buscher cat-back at the same time. Perhaps a TTP zchip later on as well.

AEM or WORKS?

Depends how many mods you want to do and plans for the car. If you plan on doing only a few things, then get the Works. The stock intake is not all that restrictive like people make it seem. It is good for easy 350whp. Over that, then you might want to consider something else.

stock air box is good for well over 350 hp. all AEM and so forth do is lean out the fuel mixture a bit to get their power.

My suggestion is to get a drop in filter (your choice) and replace the stock intake pipe ( its not smooth and isn't perfect for airflow)... get either the nisei intake pipe or the cobb intake tube and get tuned. This setup will give you max HP with little hassle and will be your cheapest option.

I am yet to see a setup that will do better than the stock air box and intake pipe, without getting its power from leaning out the fuel mixture.

its because they use a larger than stock diameter MAFS pipe, so it essentially tricks the ECU into leaning the fuel mixture out. This can actually be dangerous is a company haphazardly built their intake system; but you can be confident that the big brands spent the time to not produce a part that leans out the fuel mixture too much.

Still the best bang for the buck is what I listed... I am confident in that.

The price for me is going to be quite negligible for me. I can get a AEM air box locally for a great deal, and shipping a Works filter from US to Canada with all the applicable taxes and boarder fees will end up being quite expensive.

As the price will be close, any good gains seen in the AEM choice compared to the Works?

Thanks again

I really like my AEM intake. Great build quality, looks good (but not "blingy") in the engine bay, and good gains on the butt dyno.

As an added bonus, spool up is more audible. Makes it more fun to drive

Using AMS cold air intake and AMS Cat Back single pipe w/o tune I got 280whp on Sean Ivey's DynoJet. That is, ~60 whp for <$1K. With EcuTek tune ($750) bumped to 322whp and torque same. So for <$2K you get ~100whp&torque.

Later, Ken

Aftermarket intake systems that deviate from the OEM MAF sensor Inside Diameter and height position change the calibrations associated with the MAF sensor.
This sensor is arguably the most crucial of all the engine sensors as captured through our Mitsubishi MUT-III tool.

While developing and tuning the WORKS P-series Flashes for the EVO Xs and '08 Lancers, cars with these intake systems typically show abnormal and/or unpredictable Short & Long Term Fuel Trims. Severe cases demonstrate poor drivability and often throw CELs.

A properly designed drop-in air filter combined with the OEM sensor housing will retain stock idle and driveability.
But there are some drop-in filters which use a universal plastic insert which allows air to bypass the filter and dirt to contaminate the MAF sensor. However, that discussion is outside the scope of this thread.
