EcuFlash - Mivec Tuning 101

Hey guys,

I've been playing with EcuFlash for a while now, and one thing is clear, there is a $hit load of torque to be had with Mivec tuning. While I have picked up incredible amounts of torque from 2500-4500, I don't understand how and why.

I am an old DSM tuner with no previous camshaft timing tuning experience, so I don't understand how advancing the intake and retarding the exhaust at the same time can create so mouch more torque. Is it because the ignition is allowed to stay contained longer?

Also, doesn't retarding the exhaust actually hinder higher rpm power? Wouldn't we want to advance the echaust in the upper 6000-8000 range?

Someone help me understand WHY this is is working.

Your thinking about this the wrong way. The factory tune is for emissions, an emission tune is often a long way from best performance. If the engine was mapped for maximum performance there is no way it would pass an emissions test.
The reason you are "finding" the performance gains is because the MIVEC map is set to where it has to be not where the engine wants it to be
