totally agree. If there was a bent valve chances are the car would run so bad it couldn't even hold idle. I would say you are ok and if you brother drives it again make sure he has about 8 grand for a new motor. Can you say 2.3L stroker!!!

Thanks guys, I was pretty sure she is ok, just wanted to get some re- assurance He did feel horrible about it. He owns a GTI that has the tiptronic, so he was a bit out of practice driving a standard. I know the rev limitier keeps you from over revving in a gear, but inertia is a ***** I never heard my Evo reved that high, it freaked me out to say the least.

Dude I down shift and hit the limiter all the time!
Why you guys so gentle with it?! If the car could break down like this, I would send it back to dealer and ask for my money back!
As much as more picky you are, as more as problems come to you!

As long as you don't find anything weird you are ok.

An electrical fuel cut will do nothing to stop a mechanical over-rev.

If you don't believe me, tach out 4th then shift into 1st and see what happens.

Your right, I didnt buy this car to baby it, but if you heard the sound it made you would be concerned also. I guess it is a testimate to the way these cars are made that it didnt blow it up.

yeah something like that. I know my X runs around 4000 rpm in 5th at 80 mph so to max out 4th at 7000 your up there. The Evo x maxes out 5th at about 150 mph.

this is something I don't like about the X my IX runs 3400 rpm and is a nice wooooom sound at 80mph where as the X ist at 4000 rpm and sounds like it needs a 6th gear. If I were to max out the 4th gear in my IX and shift to 5th it be some where around 120 mph at 7200 rpm. my red line is 8000 something.

If you had an X MR, you could never over-rev the engine or miss a shift.

4b11 is not p*ssy engine that will bend the valves right away in kind of those misshifts. If you valves are bent you will have serious rough idling and shakes the engine.

rev limiter will only work when its pushing up to meet the max rev not from mechanical momentum of going small gear to a bigger gear.

don't worry you'll be fine....

I just bought an 03 evo a few months ago. I noticed when I rev to red line on 2nd gear, and try to put in 3rd, sometimes it won't go in. It's like there's something mechanical preventing the gear from going in. Not sure if this is normal or what. Anyone have this experience?

I would think they should prevent downshifting at rev limiter instead of upshifting at rev limiter.
