Missed shift

Hey everybody,

This weekend I went to visit my brother, and he really wanted to drive My Evo X. I decided to let him drive it a bit. To my horror while pulling throught he gears, after topping out 4 th gear, he went to 3rd instead of 5th and completely over reved the engine for a quick second. I asked him how high the Tach got and he said around 8 grand! I dont notice any issues or problems. I guess I was just wondering what, if any damage he could have done? Like I said there is nothing weird about the car, no strange noises or smells.

thanks!

it's a little over fuel cut, or he could be lying. Who knows.
As long as you don't find anything weird you are ok.

if he was on top of 4th and went down to third Im sure your motor revved a lot higher than 8000 rpms. I think your safe but I would never let him drive your car again. I would change the oil and look for metal shavings

worst case scenario bent or broken valves? my friend in his rsx did something similar and bent 2 or three of his intake valves... completely different engine so who knows, im sure you good if there is no engine clunking or odd smells... like def1 suggested, change your oil and check for metal

Yeah, it made me sick to my stomach. I think I will look at the oil. Maybe the dealership wouldnt be the best place to take it to get an oil change

If you had bent valves you would hear them in the exhaust note as compression dips really fast even if they are slightly bent. Likely you will be fine if he pushed the clutch in as soon as possible but checking the oil for metal would be a good idea.

This is what rev limiters are for....I was cruising at 55-60 in fourth and like an idiot thought it would be ok to downshift and take off, duh...so I briefly over-revved, but in the IX at 7,000 RPM the limiter kicks in...it was just stupid... I can't imagine you'll have any issues..

I bet you there is absolutely nothing wrong with your car. All car engines go through high RPM torture tests before entering production.

Rev limiter doesn't stop inertia and won't slow your car down thus it won't help miss shifts.

Wrong.
Rev limiter won't work if you mechanically force the car into gear spinning beyond the limit.

"Topping out 4th"- if he indeed was at 7000rpm in 4th, he would be 9200rpm in third. Its an undeniable mathematical truth. Hopefully he didn't rev 4th out that high, that's a buttload of RPM for a 4B11.

Check valves.
