Anyone use the HKS panel filter with the AP's map for it?

Just as a heads up, I had the HKS panel filter on my car and while I was using it i popped not one; but two MAF sensors. I swapped in the third MAF and did a thorough cleaning of the HKS filter (though it looked to be clean anyway) with water and air drying... the MAF has been fine since (even with the HKS still in there). What I understand is that the HKS superhybrids come equipped with an oil based solution applied to the filter to promote longevity and what not.

Bottom line: I would strongly suggest taking the filter new out of box and running water through it and letting it air dry before using it in your car. Great product otherwise.

how long ago did you buy that filter. They used to make them as a 2-layer wet style, and have now switched to a 3 layer dry filter. I have the new 3 layer dry one, I made sure it was dry after hearing the same stuff that you heard about it being a oiled filter, but mine did not have any oil in it.

I bought mine like 4 months ago. When I read about the oil based solution on the filter I looked and couldn't even tell it was there it felt so dry and rough but sure enough after i washed it I stopped popping MAF's. So even if you think your filter is g2g wash that puppy. (your supposed to periodically anyway) It can't hurt it.

-Take out the filter elements and run water through them one at a time in your sink or with any clean water source (don't use a garden hose etc.).

-Inspect after letting them air dry for any contaminants or particles.

-Put back together.

Its common knowledge that any aftermarket filter as opposed to OEM will always filter less particles, thus why they are higher/more free flowing and considered an "upgrade".

That was my point. There are many independent test out their that show that foam filters out perform paper filters from the beginning. It's only till paper/cotton filters get dirty is when the begin to filter the smaller contaminants.

Foam filters have their drawbacks though as then can get clogged up and collapse, but that's why HKS surrounds it in a plastic "cage".

yeah, but my point is simply out of all of the filters out there, the K&N does seem to get a lot of complaints about how much dust and such it lets in. I wonder how Works filters stack up against them.

Important Notes regarding the comparison:

- Extracts of this article have been transcribed from a Japanese article featured in Revspeed Magazine, August 1999.
So you are simply basing your whole "foam filters suck" based on a outdated and uncontrolled experiment?

Not all filters are created the same. It was well known that the old mushroom top filters from HKS suck, that's why they changed the design of them to a better 3 layer design.
