So I am moving to Korea sometime in late January (I'm in the Army). I have been talking with a captain in my gaining unit and he has informed me that in Korea the highest Octane level at the pump is 98.

I will be tuning my car with AMS in October with the local 92 octane but was wondering what effects whether good or bad will 98 octane have on my car. I know the right answer is to data log and send those to my tuner so he can create me a 98 map but I want to know the pros and cons. Thanks in advance

Car + mods:

2008 EVO MR
-ETS downpipe w/atmosheric dump
-ETS test pipe
-Invidia catback exhaust
-HKS drop in filter

Are you sure that you are talking about the same octane rating?
I mean, in USA you use AKI octane number (average between RON and MON octane numbers); here in Europe (and in many other conutries) instead we use directly the RON octane number. So, a US 91 octane gasoline corresponds to a 95 octane gasoline here in Europe.
For example here in Italy we have gasoline with 95 RON (similar to tour 91 AKI), 98 RON (similar to your 92-93 AKI) and 100 RON (similar to a 95 AKI).

I think that also in Korea they use the RON octane number, so at the end your 92 AKI octane number is very similar to their 98 RON octane number.

All fuel is different.

I would tune for 92oct then get yourself a cable for a quick DIY retune (logging WOT then taking out timing if necessary)

You always read that we have the poorest quality gasoline here in the states, yet it doesn't seem like any other country has a higher octane than we do. We used to even have a 94 and we still do in some areas. That's much higher than anything from a pump in Japan or Europe isn't it? Can someone explain? Or are they just referring to the 91 in Cali?

I think that who says that in USA there's the poorest quality gasoline is referring in particular to the fact that in some areas you have also gasoline with very low octane number, like 87-89, and in some States it's not easy to find the 93-94.

About the higher octane number, here in Italy (and in all Western Europe) we have:
- 95 RON, equal to your 91 AKI
- 98 RON, equal to your 93 AKI
- 100 RON, equal to a 95-96 AKI (I don't know if you have).

These are the normal fuels that you can find at the gas stations; in particular, 95 RON you can find in 100% of gas stations (it's the "basic" gasoline), 98 RON at about 50% of gas stations, 100 RON at about 40% of gas stations (actually, only Shell and Tamoil offer 100 RON).

So in my EVO X I have to use at least the 98 RON.
Bye.
