Sams club gas + automatic car wash? Poor car heh jk Sorry I couldn't resist. The last time I used costco gas was years ago in my mom's car, and she got mad at me for putting cheap gas in it.

Realistically, most gas is the same, aside from additives. Chevron with techron seems to work well for my car. On a previous car with detonation issues, Chevron ran the best (least amount of knock). Shell used to be good until they changed their v-power formulation.

yep. BP e10/93 tuned to max performance, 0 knock. went across the road and got regular shell 93, knock the instant I went WOT every time

I'm jealous. No Sunoco in Missouri, and all have 10% alcohol added here.

My list of fav 93 octane sources:
1) Shell (if it has 93, not all do -- see note below) GREAT
2) Mobile GOOD
3) Phillips66 PRETTY GOOD
99) BP - STINKS

Note, most gas stations are free to buy gas from whomever they want, so you may have the same gas at all different chain names. What affects the diff for that is basically "product turn rate", how fast does the store go thru their supply and keep it free from water condensation that does always occur.

So that also means that one Shell may have 93 and another one might not. I find this to be a real PITA when finding places to stop for gas, and we all know how thirsty Evo's are and how tiny those tanks are.

Anything less than a 93 rating and I can tell the diff. 92 diff isn't bad, but 91 definitely adds a knock. I found an Autozone brand of Octane booster that is pretty cheap and super-effective, so when I have to slum and no choice for 93 is available, I try to have one of those handy. (Disclaimer: The octane booster does say for 'off road use only'!!! Love it!)

Shell is the best in Western PA and Ohio. I didn't read through the thread, but even Buschur agrees. No more Sunoco 94 - Now they made their 91 change to 93 by adding 10% ethanol. I'm not all about that.

I bet some gas barely makes 93 octane rating if they are counting on the Ethanol to boost it from 91 to 93. The trick is to find out what gas companies use a mix that is 92 or 93 octane before adding the 10% mix of ethanol in.

I have a theory about this.

I have a choice of 2 fuels near me - Caltex Vortex98 or Shell Vpower (also 98RON)

Vortex98 knocks less and thus allows more timing - but seems to produce less power than Vpower with the same timing. It also feels more sluggish around town...

So my theory is, whilst Vpower takes less timing, Vortex98 REQUIRES more timing to make the same power.

Not sure what that means - timing != power I guess..

Your 100% right.... every gas station in america get there base fuel from th same exct place... Its the additive package that gives each its own personality.

but they have an octane rating of over 100...
