Well when it comes to simple bolt-ons, they are pretty easy to put on and take off. The question is are you willing to constantly put on and take off stuff for a trip to the dealer? That is of course if they arnt mod friendly. With going the tune route, cobb says the acessport is undetectable as long as you uninstall the tune before you go to the dealer. But then, thats $700 you need to dish out on top of getting a custom tune. But then again, it comes down to how much you value you warranty.

Feel your dealer out. I've taken my car into the local dealership many times and they haven't mentioned a word and I've got quite a few bolt ons. They even kept it overnight and not a word.

It's a fairly safe bet that anything you buy from your dealer will be ignored (by that dealer).

The only two mods that I believe are protected in case law are using different brands of filters (such as a drop-in filter in the stock airbox) and a cat-back exhaust. I've heard mixed stories about everything else.

I was at one of the local shops last week and the guy told me he has gone to stock twice to bring his X in. The guy has full TBE, a Red, and runs E85 (Walbro, injectors, etc). Absolutely insane...that'd be a full day of work even with a lift and all the right tools.

If you go drop-in, cat-back, uicp, & tune then you'd only have to swap the UICP and flash the ECU back to stock (10 minutes, tops). Some people are even concerned about reflashes, so you could look at something like Dynojet's CMD instead.

The implication in the limited warranty is for a stock evo. You mod, you mess with it, you violate the contract. The warranty is with mitsu, not the dealer. The dealer is only a third party which services the warranty contract.

if you're worried about something breaking in the powertrain and not having it covered under warranty, you shouldn't be modding.

if you're like me and you only take your car to get non-mechanical things fixed (stereo, aero kit sideskirts, recall items), you won't have to worry because the dealer doesn't care if you have intake/exhaust/turbo when they fix the fabric on your seatbacks.

wrong forum, by the way... AND this has been covered a million times in the evo X general.

It's a lot more fun that way. I agree that you shouldn't mod a car that you can't afford to fix. In theory a new car should have fewer problems anyway.

It begs the question: Change your own damn oil? It's like 35 bucks.

What does that have to do with what I stated? Every new car that I have ever owned has been less trouble than any used car that I've ever owned. I know that isn't true for everyone but when I generalize it's all about my experiences.

I personally wouldn't bother with a recall unless I was sent a letter. I know some of you guys call your dealer once a week to have your VINs run but you must be really bored.
