Knock reported when hitting the rev limiter

Seems the knock sensor gets annoyed when I hit the rev limiter.

If I hit the hard rev lmiit, I can usually expect to see knocksum around 4 to 8 reported. And when the knock sensor is unhappy, I'm unhappy.

Can someone please explain to me what's going on here...

I've whacked into that hard rev limiter for years in autox. When you're right at the top of a gear with a braking point coming right up, there's no point in changing up. And when that red mist descends, it's all too easy to hit that limiter when you should technically be levelling off a hair before.

This is my first vehicle with data logging. Has this been a bad thing to do all along? Am I only finding out now?

The rev limiter is a fuel cut. It goes lean for a split second. It's not bad for the engine.

Thanks - that's good to know. I'll get back to my bouncing off the rev limiter, then!

Well I wouldn't make a habbit of it if you raised the limiter to 8000 or higher on a stock bottom end. If it's still at 7600 then likely it's pretty safe to bounce it here and there.

Yeah, it's lower than 7600 for me! Lancer Ralliart.

It's a case of "choose your own rev limiter", really. Stock RA has a low limit, somewhere in the mid to high 6000s. I forget, to be honest. The earlier free "GST Base Map" tunes raised that to around 7150. The latest GST tune bumps it higher... but it's still below the stock Evo X limit.

Me, I chose to stick with the 7150 rev limit - I figured a 7k upshift point was more than adequate - by then, the tiny stock RA turbo is having a full-on asthma attack.

fuel cut isn't good for the engine or more importantly driveline

but exceeding the rev limit is worse

mitsu chose the best of two evils..

don't hit the rev limiter

I've hit the rev limiter at least once daily since I owned my Evo 8, 6 years now and still going (knock on wood). I think of it as my shift "light".

I wouldn't worry about it as long as you don't just drive around riding the limiter and you don't have it at some insane RPM like others have said

That reminds me, note to tephra - have you looked at modding the code for a soft rev-cut, where one ignition output is disabled followed by disabling both ignition outputs 200rpm higher.

It's at 7600rpm unless your car is tuned and for some reason the tuner gave you a lower limit than stock.
