Knocks at Low RPM & Load

Hi all, I am experiencing knocking (knock sum of 1-2) between 1000-2250 RPM and 50-100% Load area. The knocks are quite consistent and it shows up now and then in this RPM/Load region. I am currently using Tephra's ROM and I lowered the engine knock threshold to load 30% and I do get the occasional engine check light flashes.

I have already tuned down my ignition timing for the above mentioned area by quite a fair bit (between 3-8 degrees) compared to stock ignition but am still experiencing knocks.

Any idea what could be the reason?

ps: Am currently on stock turbo, AEM Intake, Blitz cat-back exhaust and Tomei stage 1 CAMs.

You shouldn't really need to worry about a knock sum of 1-2, thats pulling out .3-.7 degrees of timing respectively. If you backed out 3-8 degrees that is way too much. Who tuned the car? What is your wideband o2 showing or have you logged the afr?

FWIW I'm on a COBB protune and get a .4-.7 count occasionally at really low engine load in 2nd and 3rd gear like under 1500rpm at times. I wouldn't stress too much over it.

That's exactly what I am concerned about. I have reduce my timing for that RPM/Load area between 3 to 8 degrees and the knocks are still showing up.

My wideband will be going in next week or so, will report back the AFR.

yeah ... its a PITA.

I see knocks around the 2000-2500rpm, 70-90 load.

Not sure what it is, I have tried many different things (including going back to stock ROM) to fix, but no luck...

As long as your NOT running "stupid" timing in that area - just increase the load threshold for KnockCEL - ignorance is bliss

whats your A/F ratio?? Sometimes deposits in your combustion chamber will glow (like charcoal when burned) due to running too hot or because of the flame created during combustion and it will cause knock. This kind of knock can not be fixed by retarding the timing since spark-ignited flame is not the cause of knock.

Tephra, thanks. Will probably take your 'ignorant' advice (pun intended, and bump up the load threshold for Knock CEL.

But just like to check if anyone else is getting knocks in those region even with stock or lowered ignition timings?

Hi, I am getting occasional knock in 60-90 load 1500-2500 RPM, usually while taking off from lights. I get up to 12 knock sum. I have already pulled 2-4 degrees in that areas, but the VERY OCCASIONAL knock remains... (I am getting it in about one of ten times)

This is what I talked about you can not fix that kind of knock with pulling timing. Ill look more into this and keep you guys update.

Hi erald01, yeah it would be nice if you have some insight and findings into this irritating problem.
