Should the SST be tuned to match added power?
Building my EvoX MR has been quite a journey. Currently I'm what would be considered a full "Stage 2" (Full bolt-ons, stock turbo) + Injectors and FP. The most interesting facet to me is how a good tune brings to life the full potential of the added upgrades.
The MR is a particularly hard platform to tune for. Many tuners that I have spoken with say that tuning an MR as a full package is tougher to tune than the GT-R. I started with the Invidia Q300 Catback Exhaust, an ETS Intake, ETS FMIC+Upper and Lower piping, and a GrimmSpeed 3port EBC. My stage one tune was done by (Tuner A) It was an excellent tune, I couldn't have asked for more.
As time passed, I craved more power of course. On went the DP, HFC, TS BOV, 1000cc Inj, and DW65fp. (Tuner A) tuned it a second time. I noticed the ASC cel later that night, but (Tuner A) was already on a plane to Israel to tune cars. (This guy gets around). The cel wasn't from boosting over 30psi, but the MAP volt sensor was reading above 4.56, causing this issue.
I was frustrated and impulsively looked for another tuner to correct this issue. I made an appointment with (Tuner B) and he tuned my car. They installed the soft spring for my TS BOV and I ran it at the softest setting. When (Tuner A) came back I had him check the tune via Evoscan because I wasn't happy with it.
What we found was that the ECU mapping was nearly identical with just a few tweaks. The timing maps were identical, the boost targets were identical, Injector scaling was identical, upper and lower bound timing was identical, the fuel maps were modified, 15% was added to the MAF tables, 5% was added to the Wastegate MAP, and the MIVEC table was completely different.
(Tuner B) said that I was running too lean. I noticed high 12's and 13's for max load, in the lower rpm band, on (Tuner A's) table. Those values are irrelevant because there is no boost at that range and it never would reach that AFR. After leaving (Tuner B), my boost was reading 19psi, I smelled an increase in fumes coming from the exhaust, I would backfire a lot more, I stalled out in Normal Automatic, and the SST would slip going into first from a complete stop; it would take 2-3 seconds under light gradual throttle to get moving.
(Tuner A) took the next two hours to rework his original MAP and smooth everything out. The results were amazing. My shifts are now crisp, I feel the clutches gripping harder, very little to no backfire in S-Sport manual, no more jerkiness in S-Sport manual, all 6 main driving modes are usable (Normal,Sport,S-Sport Auto & Manual), and WOT pickup felt much better.
This just goes to show that different tuners can treat the same car in very different ways. (Tuner B) told me beforehand that he exclusively tunes the engine in MR's and doesn't touch the SST. I was stubborn and got the tune anyway. When (Tuner A) tweaked the SST tables, there was a world of difference.

This thread got a bit out of control on the EvoXforums and was deleted. So I'm going to clarify what I expect to be discussed and answered by this.
When tuning the MR platform, should a strict engine tune be used (Tuner A's Philosophy) or should the SST be tuned as well to match the added power of the engine?

Maybe you should edit this to take the names out of the thread.
I would expect any business to rightfully defend themselves.
Ergo, arguments will ensue.
Also, your post reads as a tuner review hidden behind a legitimate question.
If you want to keep this civil and open to discourse, you really should take out the names.
