What is really giving the car throaty exhaust backfires?
Here is what I mean by "throaty exhaust backfire." I think there is no car comes with this "feature" from the factory better than a Jaguar F-Type R:
I have heard many tuned Evo X's, and most of them do have this throaty sound when you lift off the throttle or when you upshift. It's just that some Evo's have very loud backfire and some do not.
My stock Evo X with the stock tune, of course, does not have a backfire sound of any kind, throaty or not.
I have been wondering which map of the tuning is really "enabling" this feature. Is it ignition timing... like very advanced timing under low load (like the picture below)? Or could that be it's something other than the tune, like camshafts and valve timing?

What you are describing is an afterfire, not a backfire. The richer the fuel mixture the slower it burns. This will cause unburned fuel in the exhaust gases as it exits the engine. When it exits the engine the unburned fuel will mix with any air leftover from combustion and ignite. Now, how you tune a car to do that I am not sure. That would be a question for your tuner.
this type of pops and bangs is a tuned feature. It is different then a back fire.
i got tuned with this feature on. my stock ecu. mine is not a button switch triggerd action. Mine is turns on over 3600rpm under that i dont have it.
the jag sound that good because he driving purposley in tunnel and between walls in Monaco
this pops and bangs are extremely loud in those conditions. Like if i do it in a tunnel literaly people get scared. But then they all smile. some of them actually start making videos. No joke.

I am suspecting the pops come from unburned fuel, but as unburned fuel enters the exhaust, wouldn't it shorten the lifespan of the catalytic converter? Thus, most Evo's with the popping sound are running catless.
The Jaguar, on the other hands, is doing it with a factory cat, which make me quite curious.
