Yeah, when I told the car salesman @ Avondale Mitsu about the problems it would be with putting in a bigger turbo, he started harpin' about how all you have to remove is the strut bar and you'll get access. I didn't even bother arguing with him. Car salesmen will say anything to sell you something.

On a different note, I was looking at the spacing where the intercooler sits and it looks like it would be very easy to fit a 4" intercooler off in there.

guys, don't let the rear mounted turbo scare you off. yes it's more of a pita to work on, but if you do everything right the first time it'll be painless. we've been dealing with lack of room for decades. here is a t67/t4 i have in my car. i have enough room for a 40r, before i do a sidewinder.

the intercooler piping isn't an issue. you'll see once you get the worthless crap out of the way, you'll have plenty of ways to route your hotside.

+1. It really shouldn't be much of a concern. numerous turbo cars are rear mounted. Besides now with the standard flow turbine (as opposed to reverse flow/direction) we can throw all kinds of combos together that will bolt right up to the stock exhaust manifold and that's good for 95% of owners power needs.

You can easily fit a GT35 to 42 in there. It would be an *** to fabricate the manifold initially but I dont see the need to go "side winder".
There is about the same room as we have to the radiator in the 4G63T.
The hard part is access from underneath the car is a s.o.b.

under boost, shearer's work is fantastic on those manifolds! looks like the down and up manifolds might work aswell as the over the box setups.

That is a big turbo!

I bet there are a lot of brand new evo owners excited about possibly having to hit their cars with a large hammer though

Exclamation Get your Aluminum Foil Rolls now, X owners..lol

Somethings would be easy and somethings would be hard, the fact is... i rather have the turbo up front.. anyday..

Side winder set ups are going to be amonst the most popular set up for a X.. even if you could mount a 35R behind there.. I doubt ppl are going to like the heat..

I disagree. I think that the only logical place to put the turbo and manifold is in the traditional stock location. There is no need to bring it out into the engine bay, there is enough room in the stock location.

The heat problem was already thought of my Mitsubishi. They put a functional hood scoop that draws in cold air from outside the hood. That same air channel should meet up with the air passing under the car.

The only downside of this place is that you cant show your 4k turbo kit off

A big benefit of having the turbo back there is rust will be a minimal issue...

only problem is with sidewinder manidolds is that the evo will sound like a subby with the long runners of the sidewinder you can hear the exhuast pulses, sort of like a subaru.at least on the k series it sounds like a subaru.i guess its better to keep that turbo behind the motor

thanks guys!

i think once you guys start tearing into these cars, you'll find that large turbos will fit. we have a guy with a vr6 (15* angle v6) with a 4202 sitting behind it, in a 92 gti. it's silly. just trying to give you guys some inspiration. there is hope. promise.
