The Evo X clutch is manufactured by Exedy and looks similar to the VIII & IX. The pressure plate is a pull type design and retains the same 240 mm diameter as the previous cars. The release bearing has been revised along with the clip that holds it in the diaphragm.

Any idea what the holding power is on the stock clutch?

it depends on how you drive it.

some fried VIII stock clutches in 1-2k miles. Mine lasted 48k. And was still good I just built the block and upgraded clutches.

yep. Dont believe all the evo clutch horror stories.....

My VIII had 30-40 launches, 20K miles, stock clutch was fine.

My IX, 40K miles, 40+ launches, stock clutch fine.

The clamp load of the pressure plate and the disc's friction material is unchanged so the torque capacity of the X clutch should be identical to the 8/9 clutch.

ACT,

I notice a very long transition from disengagement to engagement, is that due to it's design or possibly the clutch delay valve?

This makes it impossible to quickly slip the clutch without burning the friction surface a bit.

I am sure it has a lot to do with it. If the car is abused, Mitsubishi would perfer to have you burn friction material at your expense (not covered under warranty) rather than break transmissions at their expense (warranty item). The best way to find out is to pull it out and compare how it drives. It is easy to try it and just as easy to put it back if necessary.

I'm not sure the friction material is the same. Whenever I'm forced to slip the clutch on a steep hill or for whatever reason, a certain stench that I've not smelled before fills the cabin. It doesn't smell like any clutch material I've ever smelled before; kinda "rotten eggs" like.

Has anyone else noticed that?

I have the same problem... I looked and didn't see the normal lock nut/threaded rod connected to the pedal assembly... I asked by Dealer and they said it's non-adjustable. I find that very hard to believe, I am in the process of locating a tech manual.
