Clutch GONE...Mitsubishi wont cover it.

Hey guys,

im new to the forum but I just wanted to share my unpleasant experiences with Mitsubishi thus far. I bought the car about a month or so ago and started experiencing the dreaded clutch slip, that is indicative of a clutch going bad, around 2600 miles. I made an appointment for service on a Friday but by the end of the weekend my clutch was gone. I took it in to the Mitsubishi dealer where it sat for a week and they wanted $348 just to take it apart and look to see if it even was covered by warantee. They finally got it apart and sent pictures to the local rep who immediately denied to cover it. After reading about how crappy the stock clutch is I had ordered an Exedy Twin Disc in advance anyway and planned to upgrade no matter what the decision. Ultimately I will have to pay for the install, clutch, new throw out bearing, and my car rental as I havent gotten a loaner from the dealer for the past week or so since I had the car towed to them...a sum totalling close to four grand. The Evolution X is advertised as a performance vehichle but the stock clutch cannot really handle for it to be driven in this manner. The morale of the story is, dont buy this car unless you are prepared to spend alot of money upgrading it to perform as advertised -"buyer beware".

Note: My previous vehicle was a 2004 Infiniti G35 coupe 6MT and I have seven years experience driving cars with a manual transmission. My dealings with Infiniti service where second to none and I truly regret trading it in for a car who's manufacturer does not stand behind its vehicles or seemingly its customers.

It's been the same since the EVO came here in 03. I bought my car knowing full well they'd never warranty anything on it. I did get my peeling wing replaced though

I wouldnt let most of them fools anywhere near my car with a wrench anyway. I came from an Acura many years ago now and their service was on the ball.

Car is fully stock. Mitsubishi really should sell this car with a disclaimer.. "warning driving car as advertised will cause spontaneous combustion of clutch, which will not be covered by warantee"

i agree, its BS. but clutch is a wear and tear item. 2600 miles is unacceptable though. they SHOULD cover it, but they wont. i am a tech at a BMW dealer and this would be covered NO QUESTIONS ASKED. unfortanatly, mitsu is a pretty ****** company. after a while... you will expect poor service at the dealer.

good luck, and just think of it as a learning experience.

um... why does everyone blame the clutch, sure its weak... mines still holding at a decent level of power, over 300whp.

Its all about how you drive the car, it will hold power if you don't try to launch the car 100 times.

stop *****ing if you abused the car and ruined your clutch. Pay to play.

forgot to add: If you turn up the boost and blow your motor...... Mitsu won't cover the cost of a new engine.... I know...HOW DARE THEY!

yeah, you are right. If you drive like a b i t c h...your car will be just fine. Whats the point of buying a performance oriented car if it falls apart when you drive it as such? Do you drive the kids in the evo to the soccer game mom? Oh, it surely must be me...I "abused" my performance vehicle by driving it as intended...tool.

Read the manual

Yes it's chicken-****, but it's in the warranty manual that was covered when you bought the car.

BRAKE PADS and CLUTCHES ARE CONSIDERED WEAR MATERIALS AND ARE NOT COVERED.

tack on this cost to the cost of the car if you are going to buy one.

Guess what, in the cars stock form on a circuit track the clutch will hold perfectly fine, lap after lap. The evo isn't a drag car... its not intended to launch on pavement many times where the degree of grip is much higher then that of gravel/dirt.

I'm a tool because I know how to properly drive a car aggressively without killing a clutch?

THEY SHOULD COVER IT!!!! DONT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER!! my dealership tried to f me once and they heard my mouth. Everything was covered that went wrong!! what dealership was this? Im serious, dont let them get away with this. If they cannot prove your negligence or that an aftermarket part caused failure, THEY SHOULD COVER IT. I would never leave until they do. I would make a scene everyday in the sales room if need be. Threaten to blog and black list them on forums.

Im so mad right now. lol

I abused my new car and killed the clutch, its the cars fault. you are right trade it in on an STi.

i'm sick of these threads with people whining about Mitsu sucking so bad when in reality; sure they suck some..... But most companies aren't gonna warranty an abused car. Sure BMW would replace the clutch...why? Because the number of people who mod BMW is very very slim, where as those who buy Evos i'm willing to bet over 60% get modified.... it comes with the territory. We built our own grave so to say...

Mitsu built a car with great aftermarket support ability, they shouldn't be expected to pick up the slack of poor modding, and poor driving, and poor tuning.
