Question Cams and clutch install for X

Have any shop done any install or anyone have an upgraded cams (kelford, cossie or gsc) and clutch on their X?

Is it hard to install upgrade cams and clutch on our car?

I tried to get a quote with a local shop and he told me that
"Cam install on the X is going to be quiet a bit more complicated than the VIII and IX, motor has to be jacked up (possibly even pulled) and due to the X being a timing chain not a timing belt that is going to bring up it's own problems." (he quoted me 12 hours to do the cams)

he also told me that the clutch on the X will take 12-14 hours to finish and is more complicated than the VIII and IX.

is he true?

will you pay 12 hours x $100/hr shop rate ($1200) to install the cams and possibly $1200-1400 to install the clutch?

i lived in San Francisco, do you guys know any good and reasonable shop that has experience on X?

thanks guys

kl

I've helped out with the clutch install on my X, and it's a bit more work then the VIII/ IX

RRE usually knocks out the VIII and IX clutches in 4-5 hours, from start to finish.

It took them around 7-8 hrs on mine. (keep in mind, mine was the 1st one they did)

As far as the cam install goes, the shop is 100% correct about the jacking the motor up and what not, not sure about the labor quote though, if i'm not mistaken, the cam install on the Cosworth cams was around 5-6 hours total (RRE also did this) It is also more work then the VIII and IX ...

Good luck.

I don't know how far you are from GST Motorsports, but id talk to Bryan, and see what he thinks.

I coulda swore shop time was $55-$70 per hr???? $100.00 an hour seems like to much??

GST or SpeedElement would be your best bet.

Yup...more GST love. From what I've been told at the guys at GST it is a huge PITA to do the cam install. Let us know what they come up with in terms of an estimate.

Just remember you will likely need to buy a few buckets to get the valve lash into spec. Not sure how much the Mitsu ones cost but Subaru ones are about $15 each.

Sadly we just moved out of SF, but we are still local. We do clutch, cam and anything else you can thing of when it comes to the Evo. We just opened up a new shop located on Stevens Creek in San Jose, right across from Santa Row! Great new local location. So PM me for more info if you are still looking for a shop.
