benefit to muffler with 2 exits?

ive noticed the s2000, gr sti and evo x have this. is it just a marketing thing cause it looks cooler to some? is there any benefit or just more weight. on a v8 with 2 cylinder banks makes sense with a crossover pipe, but on a 4-banger why? this is kinda a newb question i know....

strictly looks, but if it has it I like to stick to something similar. Just my .02. A single exit on a 4 banger would be just as efficient and less weight.

As far as everyone has prove there is no real benefit from a dual exhaust. The motor of an Evo X in not a "V" configuration, so it does not have a need for a dual symmetry by nature. The choice of dual V. single is purely an aesthetic choice, there is no advantage of one over the other regarding output.

What these guys said, there is no benefit except to make me change the exhaust quicker.

There is a benefit, the car can be quieter while still having good flow.

Say you have a single muffler on a 3" exhaust. Compare that to an exhaust that splits into two 3" pipes each going to a muffler. You increased your piping, but you also increased your flow area, so the overall pressure loss is probably about the same. Except now, you have two mufflers, so it's quieter.

The only increase you get is weight.
You will not increase power output.
You will decrease sound as spdracerut stated.
It is purely aesthetics.

You're gonna get to this decision: which one do you want better, performance or looks? Obviously a dual exhaust looks better, because you've got the symmetry and what not. But you add weight (generally) and making it fit causes the exhaust to have more bends in it. With a single exit (i.e. AMS, Greddy Ti-C) there are minimal bends and weight, and great flow. Single exits have the downside of a sound problem, but I know somebody with a Ti-C and I think it's got a great sound level--not too loud. And just because there's more stuff in dual exits, they're more expensive.

On a v8 it makes sense if it's a true dual setup (ie. 4 cylinders per pipe). On the evo 8 and 9's. It is not even worth thinking about ( just look at the AMS drag car). on the X's
The rear defuser has 2 openings and IMO does not look good with a single. If you have a X look at the buschur exhaust it's dual, weigh's less than a single( about the same as an amuse listed at 8.8 kg x 2.2 = 19lbs) , performs better than any others I have seen dyno's for. Draw back is as with any
buschur product .... No bling ... I want Ti tips but what do you do!
