Test pipe or no test pipe?

hey all,

I am thinking about getting a test pipe. A straight through one and I was just wondering if you guys think its worth it. Currently im at 319 whp and 301 wtq and they say, i can get 350whp with the test pipe. Let me know what you guys think as i am definitely considering this.

30 whp from a test pipe is a stretch, maybe the xtremeboost external dump o2 downpipe and a test pipe would, but not just a test pipe..

obviously you misread my thread. I currently have 319 whp and 301wtq. So the test pipe would give me 30wheel hp. (thats what i am told) i have been told it makes a big difference and the car will breath much better. Anyone had any issues with running without a cat or any troubles with the law?

Why not run a high flow cat instead? You'll still gain some good power (maybe 28hp instead of 30hp) and it won't be as loud.

Just get a HFC if you haven't bought anything yet. A 100 cell HFC flows almost as well as a testpipe, will be quieter, smell less, pollute less, and pass emissions/inspections. If they are telling you you'll gain 30 whp from a test pipe (that seems like a lot to me for just a test pipe, do you already have a TBE but with the stock cat? Because that would make sense) then you'll probably gain like 28 whp (like someone already said) with the HFC.

There is no way you'll see 30whp with a test pipe vs the stock cat. I'd say 10-15whp at most. If you can handle the noise and don't mind being a little less green, I'd rock the test pipe. You will get quicker spool up with the test pipe than you would with just a HFC.

Listing your other mods might help alleviate some confusion as to what hp you could potentially make as well. When my car was stock, the test pipe allowed me to spool 3-400 rpm sooner vs using the stock cat. ~Trent

Haha, yea i should have listed the mods from the start. I have the works drop in filter, Buschur bullet exhaust (which i would switch to the quiet version so that with the test pipe it would not be too loud). And as i said i have the cobb AP, and a custom tune right now running 319 whp and 301 wtq with the stock cat and stock DP, works filter and Buschur exhaust. So i my wonder was just wether I will really notice the difference and if you think i will run into any trouble with the law. lol.

If your Evo is your daily driver, then HELL NO, don't get a test pipe.
Obviously, you won't pass emissions test and your exhaust will become really loud.
In Colorado where I live, there are vans that are parked on the side of the road that are able to detect emissions from cars and take pictures of license plates. With a test pipe, you'd definitely get screwed. Keep your stock cat in storage in case you ever need to put it back on.
I would recommend a high-flow cat. AMS Performance makes one for the Evo X. I've heard that the high-flow cat doesn't pass emissions tests either though.
I personally only modified my exhaust with a cat-back. I don't think I'll get a downpipe or a test pipe. I think my next step is a new air intake, access port, and tune.

have those. Have a works drop in, accessport and custom tune. And im at 319 301tq. And i have a tune for with the stock cat, and i think i might want a tune for a test pipe. And i really want to go to the buschur quiet (i have the bullet now) and i want to just make it a bit louder than the buschur quiet and make more power.
