The sound of the exhaust more heavily weighs in on the muffler, not the test pipe.

Exclamation

There is a cheaper way! You could empty your stuck catalytic
It will look stuck but without any filter!
You might ask how?
You need hammer and blade, After you done breaking inside, Wash and clean it..
Caution, Do it at your own risk

and then when smog time comes, you get to go buy a new stock cat converter , just buy a test pipe, when smog time comes throw your stock cat back on.

hey guys, I ressurected this thread because I'm debating the same thing. It's between the milSpec 100 cell race cat (whenever that thing comes out) and an AMS resonated test pipe. I've talked to a bunch of STi and Evo 8/9 people and typically, it's not about how loud it is or how much power you can gain because a good flowing hfc and a test pipe typically only have a 3-5whp difference and as mentioned earlier loudness (not tone) is determined by how good your muffler is.

The real debate on whether to use a hfc or a pipe, apparently, is influenced by whether you want want to run race gas or even to some extent, E-85. I'm hearing that both (but more race gas) kill the material in your cat over time. Is there any truth to this, and if so how much damage and how quickly does it happen depending on the fuel (100+ Octane vs E-85)? Thanks

100-octane unleaded will do nothing to your cat (I've ran a car on 100 octane for almost a year exclusively)

100-octane LEADED (or any leaded gas for that matter) will kill your cat over time.

Not sure about E85 though.. I run a test pipe with it currently, only because I had it on pre-conversion.

Cool, thanks for the clarification.

Anyone else got any valuable input?

E85 is fine with a cat, have a ton of guys ripping around with cats on E85.

As far as gains between all take a look at these old comparisons I posted:

^wrong, evo 8 doesn't equal evo 10. Please don't speculate, then people go out and do stuff and are like wtf.

From personal experience, going from the stock cat to a straight test pipe the sound level increased dramatically, i still like it but it is for sure loud.

If you want to save the planet go buy a hybrid (hehehe)... I just installed my ETS tp and to be honest it didn't make the car much louder (I currently have the buschur quite catback and soon will be adding an ETS DP). I really like how it sounds, deep and mean.

On a side note about saving the planet, I once got lectured at the gas pump (I work for a energy service company that isn’t like by some people in California) by a guy driving an F250 lifted on HUGE tires. He told me I was killing the planet, so I asked him, what about you, his answer… “My truck uses diesel, which is way better than gas”… I just got in my car and drove off.
