trans/diff broke
Ok, since ive been building motors and have been a mechanic for many years you can trust me it sounds like the engine but isnt. You can put your head in the engine area no noise, the transmission side is where its coming from and you can the feel the thud on the top front corner with your hand. Push the clutch in and the noise is gone. Heres your proof.
^^^ Outstanding rebuke, 4myX.
It does sound like a trashed transfer case.. Just had one similar to that at work last week.
Where are you planning to source a new tranny or transfer case from? I forget what X ACDs go for, but the IX ACD is almost $4k at the dealer.. *facepalm*

I don't understand how it could be a transfer case since it is only there when the engine is disengaged from the tranny. I think you **** a bearing or it is something to do with your clutch...
how can a spun bearing not make noise when the clutch is pressed? it is obviously something in the transmission
4myx,
i had somethign extremely similar happen to me in my old GSX. What it turned out to be was one of the springs from the pressure plate came apart and lodges in such a fashion that it was "slapping" against the moving parts in the clutch area. sounded almost exactly like that. Fixed it with a new clutch pressure plate and flywheel. just my .02

I didn't say it was a spun bearing... I was talking about a throw out or pilot bearing. But I am leaning more towards one of the springs in the clutch failing.
