Where to start moding?
Where to start moding?
Can someone please give me a run down on where I should start as far as tuning my 1st Evo (08 GTS). I got an AEM intake installed about a week after I bought it and plan to do a turbo back exhaust and Cobb ap. I can't decide on an exhaust yet, I like a 80mm dual that would also decrease weight. I can afford and am allowed 1 mod a month, including install(s). I would like to avoid voiding the warrenty (3yrs) but after the warrenty is up I want a 10 sec car that is a daily driver and handles better than stock. If that's possible. Would love any advise or input, especially on what mods I should do in what order so I don't end up replacing parts and hoses multiple times.
Also knowing more indepth what each mod does would be super cool, for example, what does a bov do (other than make a cool noise) that increases performance.

I would say get a Turbo Back Exhaust( for better air flow from the turbo) and get a Cobb AccessPort. The Cobb AP is a plug and play ecu reflash. If you ever want to turn your ecu back to factory setting, you can in less than 5 minutes.
It is totally possible to have a DD 10 second car. Now that being said, it would probably be a 10.99 second car or soemthing like that, but still 10 seconds.
My plan is as follows (much like you have started doing already)
-Turboback Exhaust (wait on downpipe if you plan on getting a turbo kit EVER)
-Intake
-FMIC
-Cosworth/Kelford Cams
-UICP (LICP if you want, but probably wont benefit from this much)
-TUNE!
-Dom 2.0 or FP Red Turbo (w/ water meth inj.)
OR
-AMS/ETS/etc. 35R Turbo Kit or Equivalent (might need water/meth inj.)
I plan on doing all of that with the AMS kit and some sort of short block to beef up the bottom end. I'm mostly afraid of the pistons.
I'm sure I missed something obvious so if someone has more to add please do so. I am not saying this is the best idea for a high 10 second car and DD, but it should get you close.
Others please chime in!

Not trying to be "that guy", but have your ever driven a 10 second car before? Not saying you haven't, but since the fast and the furious has come out everyone and their mother thinks they can handle a 10 second car. If you have and you think it will really be tame enough to be a daily driver then I should invest in some of that reefer you're smoking.

Thanks for some ideas flyguycfi, and thx for the reality check Meth Ad. any other ideas are much appriciated too, I've been told cams w/ x the warenty, i would guess a turbo kit as well.
Will a FMIC though?

Best thing you can do is read the forums...you will gain ALOT of knowlage...and i don't mean that in a rude way. I just see alot of awkward questions and stuff in your first post. The GTS when you have a GSR, the BOV question, the 1 mod a month thing.
The X really enjoys bolt-ons and a tune. With just bolt-ons and a tune the X will produce over 100whp and 100wtq. that should keep you satisfied for the time being. Just work your way up with what you can afford with basic bolt-ons and definitely get a tune after you get the parts on.
Do something in the route of:
1. cat-back
2. test-pipe or HFC
3. intake
4. UICP
5. o2/downpipe
6. intercooler
7. LICP
then get a tune and you should be happy with it. you don't have to get all those parts as some parts people will say you can leave some out till later on. but thats what i did. take a look at my sig for my parts and numbers. i would also invest in a boost gauge to moniter boost.

I would buy all the basic bolts ons. Do all the work yourself so you get to know the car better! Enjoy those Hp gains... You can prolly spend around 3k and run low 12's ( depending on the driver. One thing for sure take it slow, break in the can and get to know her better. After power mods do suspension rice and body rice. Get some nice wheels... Get a big bolt on turbo so you can do the work yourself and enjoy! Personally speaking of course, that is the route I'm taking and i will enjoy a 12 second car for a while until i decide to go further. There are a lot of cool ppl from what I saw that are willing to help.

there is nothing difficult about driving a built motor with a 35r or equivalent turbo kit as a dd. That could absolutely get you a high 10 second car. Sure you might have some turbo lag, or the clutch may be a bit more difficult to slip depending on what you get, but it wouldn't keep me from dd-ing it.
Check out some of the posts by Buschur on this forum, they have taken a very practical approach to modding their X, and describe in detail their decision making process. It's not a 10 second car, but it probably will be the way that they're going, and they haven't modified anything that didn't need it, so it seems like a very cost effective build path.
OP, please don't take this as me being a dick, but it sounds like you're way in over your head. You don't even know what a BOV is/does? How did you decide that you need a 10 second car?
First, voiding your warranty. Will depend on your dealership. The most likely scenario is that they won't allow any mods. Especially an ECU tune. So, just accept that your warranty is going to be gone.
Second, check out the drag racing section in this forum. Find out which cars are running 10.XX and check their mod list. Maybe strike up a conversation with one of the guys and see what they tried and did to get their car there.
Third, contact a reputable tuner and consult them.
Fourth, work on the driver mod. A lot.
