Mysterious Engine Trouble...knocking and power loss.
so i read through the whole thread and am still confused. can anyone say for certain what initiated the knocking? the unplugged battery when doing upgrades/retune?
sorry to hear you're trading in the car. I hope someone else can figure out the problem and do what others have previously suggested in using the stethoscope.

I will be more than happy to answer any questions if anyone comes up against this issue (I really hope no one ever has this issue though).
Just as a quick background, I currently have a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS turbo'd about 2 years ago, using a Evo 8 Ecu (ecuFlash for tuning), 440RC injectors, Evo 8 fuel pump, Aeromotive FPR, Big Evo3 16g,.
HOWEVER, when I brought my car to be tuned finally, the tuner said I was getting ridiculous counts of knock (upwards of 25). No matter how much he retarded the timing or added fuel, it would still happen. I went back to him 3x; doing different things such as adjusting spark plug gap, changing coils, changing plugs, changing ecu's, running different vacuum setups, using different ROMS, even got my injectors cleaned and flow tested, all to no avail; STILL knocking at +20.
I even looked using the knock control posted in these forums (https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ec...e-found-3.html) and still, even while using it, got about 10+ counts of knock.
To this day, I'm still working on it (have really started to since March). I recently found a thread on here about the EGR valve (https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ec...enoids-10.html) and how if its enabled it can cause problems with timing and such. I disabled it, and still, the same result.
My plans are, from here, to do a boost leak test (b/c I think I have a leak somewhere) and then go over my scalings/maf settings, and if that is okay, and I'm still getting knock, I have no idea where to go from there.
Sorry for the long post, but I understand your frustrations, trust me. I felt like I was the only one with this problem.
If you want to look at my situation, go here... (http://www.club3g.com/forum/rs-gs/12...ng-tune-4.html)
I don't really have much car experience to take apart the motor and all that, nor really the time or place to do it, but I do what I can because I really do love the car and want to experience boost with it, but I am so close to just calling it quits.

Another friend of mine had the issue. This makes six Evo Xs I know of that had this problem. This car was torn down, and there was a cracked ring land on #4. Of the ones I know of that were torn down, three of them had a cracked ring on #4. This car was knocking audibly, randomly, and not always when in boost. The car would see up to 25 counts at points!
Anyway, this issue is real, its bad, and it lends credibility to a lot of what TTP suggested early on. One of the cars that had the issue was super light mods, very conservative tune. I don't know if there was a faulty ring set early on, they all are like this and its dumb luck, or what.
Good luck in the future, Boostd4!

Hey sorry that you've experienced what I've been experiencing with my setup (minus the audible knock), but on a totallly different platform.

I was working with guys who build cars that see 2X stock power output on a daily basis...and they were literally speechless by the time we put the car back together.
I did lose some money going back to an IX...but honestly, not having the headache and actually enjoying my investment was worth it.
I wish you luck. Just make the decision that best suits you.
sucks to find out whats happenin with your car, well to add a simple possible fix, you ever thought about throwin in some fuel injector cleaner, maybe you have some possible carbon building up in the intake system, even though its a x depends on how many miles you have?? you sure you have no exhaust leaks???, do you have a wideband in the car or you going off tailpipe readings??
