Possibly, at this point we have to explore everything I guess. But what is causing the sound is the big question.

Definitely. In my friend's car, it was very loud at points, and I didn't think knock would be this audible. The shop owner that heard it often cannot hear det as easily as I can, but everyone in the shop that day heard it clear as a bell.

The problem is that they didn't load it on the dyno to track it down, as they presumed it was real knock. So in the case that it was, they were afraid they were damaging the engine. Since the shop closed last weekend and the car will be traded on Saturday, there is no way for further testing.

I am certain that if the "knocking" can be heard, that the car needs to be held at the rpm on the dyno, then a competent mechanic quickly diagnose where the sound is coming from, isolating the problem so a cure can be quickly found.

This is my thought as well.

Boostd's car knocked audibly as clear as purple crayon.

It's much easier to hear knock on the 10's compared to the 8's and 9's because of the alum block, just like the subarus. On the 8 and 9 you would need a pretty significant knock event to hear it.

On the 10 I've heard it audibly in the dyno room with the dyno and fans running on a bunch of 10's. On the 8/9's it's VERY hard to hear it on the dyno, a little easier to hear it on the street.

I can't say the battery reset will always cause problems, but 5th gear at high load on the highway seems to be bad news if it's the first WOT that the car sees after a reset. For me once I get on the throttle a few times in other gears I've never seen that mystery knock occur again. I'll experiment some more and report back tonight.

Nope, already explored that.

So the car should be back together this week. Dyno run post assembly to follow.

If this problem could get resolved, my opinion of my own car (which doesn't even have this problem) would improve greatly. I don't want a longterm investment in something with wonky issues like this.

Personally I am starting to believe that the knock sensor on the Evo X is not sensitive enough with the aluminum block to pull timing at every knock event as well as being able to hear audible knock before knocksums appear in live datalogging.

I would do what was mentioned above. Try and replicate the knock, and pin point exactly where it is coming from.

I really hope you get this all worked out.

Well guys...after a long fought battle and over 6 months of poking at the car...I'm throwing in the towel.

I'd like to thank the guys at GST (Mike, Bryan, Tommy, and Mert) for helping me through this painful process. I'd also like to thank Hiboost, Noize, SiC and Dino for the support network up to this point.

I'm pretty bummed that I didn't find a resolution to this issue...but I'm at the end of my rope. I'll be posting up parts in the for sale section soon.

Ah man, I hate to see a fellow car enthusiast be crippled so badly by an impossible issue like this. Even though I've had my own share of problems, all of them are fixable via money and/or time with a (somewhat) clear solution. Hopefully you'll settle on a car that will be more kind to all of your efforts.

Yeah, it really sucks...but I found an Evo 9 SE that I'm picking up this weekend to replace it. So win win .

F!

I had my fingers crossed that the rebuild would magically fix the issue. Sorry to hear this man.
