hard to get in reverse
From what I understand, reverse on the GSR uses the 1st and 3rd gears. I read on these forums a while ago that shifting to 1st and then 3rd before going into reverse will help if you get locked out. The one and only time I have had difficulty getting into reverse was a few weeks ago leaving work. 1st->3rd->reverse, and I was on my way.

I just got my X a couple of months ago and i live in Jersey. Just started getting cold here...i ran into that problem this morning...i used the above method. I also have a civic beater thats manual, never ever had this problem. Shouldnt have to do this with a car that cost this much.
I understand what you are saying, i still love my car, but that cold start shifting is annoying. I owned cheaper cars with manual trans and my last car was a G35 coupe, never had a problem shifting gears because of cold weather.

As confirmed in these Mitsu training videos you are indeed correct that reverse is obtained with the 1st and 3rd gears via a reverse idler gear. Check out the third video for the 5 speed tranny explanation:

My 06 SE does this really bad too. Neither my 2g, gvr4, or starion are like the evo. I thought maybe it had something to do with the twin disk or clutch in general. Going to service the transmission and see if it helps.
The X does not have an actual reverse gear, this is one of the slight downfalls, but it was done to reduce rotational mass. Generally a clutch out then back in solves it, or going into 1st then R.
I have always done the 1st to reverse in all my other cars. Someone on this forum had posted about going into 4th and then reverse and I have been doing that. Seems to work ok.
