hard to get in reverse

Since the day i got my evo ive had a problem putting the car in reverse. When i sit in the car after starting it the car doesnt seem to want to go into gear eventually after going up and down from first to reverse it will go in but its starting to get old. Anyone else have this problem? Also sometimes it appears like its in reverse but it almost feels like its in 4th and the car just wont move and it will pop out

Is yours an MR or a GSR?

My MR isn't happy getting into reverse immediately after I turn the car on. I usually wait at least 5 seconds for all the electronics to be stable before going into reverse - I've never had an idle since.

Mine fights me to get into reverse after a cold start too. Once shes warmed up all is well, but just gotta wake her up to cooperate. Maybe a different fluid would help...

I was kind of wondering the same. All of the manuals I've had have done something similar. Just push the shifter back into first, and then it'll easily slip down into reverse again. Problem solved. Worst case, roll it slightly forward and then into reverse.

But it sounds like you already knew the solution. Just learn to deal with it, I guess? There's nothing you can do about it.

I know first and reverse share syncros, at least on hondas they do. When my honda had problems goin into first or reverse, i would let it roll a little bit, like move which way it could, then it cooperates.

A spur cut gear (reverse) is used so it can unmesh with the other gears. helical gears are always in mesh and don't separate ( forward gears using sycros/hubs to keep them from free wheeling on the shaft when in use) i don't believe a reverse gear uses a sycro/hub but rather your sliding the entire gear into mesh. if they arnt aligned some what, its gonna take a little more effort or rolling of the car to get it in.

not sure if the evo works that way. i know it works a little bit different then normal, but should be something like that.

Same thing happens in my car in durring cold starts in th morning and I already switched to amsoil. I sometimes put it in thrid, then in reverse or let it roll down my drive way for like a foot then it goes into reverse easier.

Have you tried running through the gear pattern before you try reverse? In other words, start the car, wait a few seconds to get the clutch bearing(s) properly lubricated, then depress the clutch and slide the transmission into 1st, then 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th, then 5th. Then, push it back to neutral, release the clutch, then depress the clutch and put it into reverse.

I've found with vehicles that have a tighter or worn gearbox, if you do this, it will generally shift into reverse easier. It may be a lubrication issue but it's probably just the fact that the gears are slightly misaligned initially and the shifting sort of brings them all into easy alignment.

From what I understand, reverse on the GSR uses the 1st and 3rd gears. I read on these forums a while ago that shifting to 1st and then 3rd before going into reverse will help if you get locked out. The one and only time I have had difficulty getting into reverse was a few weeks ago leaving work. 1st->3rd->reverse, and I was on my way.

Yeah LagginTimes and the others are right. Shift into other gears and it helps. Mine does it probably 50% of the time when I start it up in the morning.
