Test Pipe vs. Mini Muffler

Does anyone have experience with both? Just curious about how much louder it is with the straight TP vs. a mini muffler or the HFC I have now. Thanks!

****! Might as well keep this up for search references but here...

I didnt see on the AMS site this:

HFC:
Decibel Levels
• Idle: 72db
• 50mph: 92db
• 6000rpm: 112db

Mini Muffler:
Decibel Levels
• Idle: 72db
• 50mph: 92db
• 6000rpm: 112db

TP:
Decibel Levels
• Idle: 82db
• 50mph: 95db
• Full Throttle: 6000rpms

On my VIII I had just a straight 3 inch pipe going to a magnaflow muffler. I added a vibrant perforated resonator and it took all of the "brattyness" that I had ~ the 3500 area away and really toned it down on the interstate.

I guess it would be considered a mini-muffler...

I'm kinda amazed that the resonated test pipe is just as loud as the hfc... there's gotta be a difference in the pitch though, which does play a roll in perceived noise level versus what's detected. Was that typo about 6000rpm decibel level for the test pipe completely copied over?

I put exactly what AMS did. I'm sure that is just a typo.

Yea the lower the pitch the "louder" it sounds. This is why they make jets a higher pitch now so even if it's the same decibels people don't get annyoed as much.

I guess I'll get the resonated test pipe with the AMS single exit for maximum performance.

What is stock?? Anyone have that?

And with just a downpipe, how much power is the stock cat robbing vs a hfc/mini muffler...?

Not sure about the stock noise levels, but I know AMS claims 12whp with a HFC and 15whp with TP/Resonated TP.

I think my resonated Tr-1 test pipe was quieter than my AMS HFC (all with a greddy exhaust)

12 and 15 whp WITH JUST adding the hfc/resonated tp?

So if you made 301 whp with a 02 dp, sri, and tune.. and if you added a hfc or resonated tp and retuned it would be around 313 to 316 whp?

ehhh

In theory... actually the most gains have been with the removal of the stock cat and replacement with the TP or HFC...

But from what I have learned is that it is a combination of parts that create power and the tune, not just adding this part give me 15hp and this part gives me 20hp.. you know.

can you mate the hfc up to the downpipe and leave the catback stock? for sound purposes? I want a quiet car.. I can live with something |-|--------------| (that much louder than stock) but other than that no thanks. I am tired of loud exhausts had a d1sc procharged z06 catless with borla stingers and a forged bov

yes you can connect the to.... i would get a test pipe if you are going just keep your stock muffler, it should not be all that much louder.

Is there any smell difference from a hfc to a mini muffler?
