Question on Intake (AEM, Injen, K&N Typhoon)

After reading almost every Intake thread on here, I still can't decide on an intake. I've narrowed it down to 3 intakes, the AEM, the Injen, and the K&N Typhoon. I want an intake that uses that stock air box air inlet (which the AEM and Typhoon do), but I wan the noise of an open air filter like the Injen and Typhoon have (yes, I know wanting the turbo whine and BOV noise is ricey...but it adds to the Visceral-ness of the car).

Question is; while the Typhoon seems to meet both requirement, there is no Cobb map for it, so could I use an Injen map since they are really similar or am I asking for trouble?

Does the AEM make "the noise" with the top of the cover off (yes, I know the cover off defeats the mpurpose of the box, but it makes it a nice option - noise on or noise off)?

I have read arguments that the AEM raises the boost by t-tapping some line, is this true and does it make it harder to tune if I was to pro-tune it?

Thanks!

I'm actually considering either AEM or HKS. One of the reason why I'm considering AEM is the BOX! I think even with the cover, it makes pretty good sound. But then, if you are going for the sound, I think HKS makes the best sound.

I'd like to see what other people have to say though.

I have the AEM intake, and with the lid on I can hear it (barely) over my turbo-back during normal driving, I havent tried driving with the lid off since I installed my turbo-back, so maybe I'll try that tomorrow and let you know how it works out

I've had very good luck with my AEM intake, and I bought it for a number of reasons:

1) Dry filter that is washable - No oil to screw up the MAF

2) Closed design - No heat soak like you would get with a SRI

3) Uses the stock air intake tube in the front

4) You don't have to clean the air filter as often compaired to a CAI that has the air filter in the fender

5) Cobb has a Stage 1 & 2 tune for the AEM

Yes it does minimally raise boost levels by design, and no it's not much louder than the stock air box. My old set up with an HKS drop in & stock air box made more noise...but I could care less.

aem use diffrent vaccum lines then the rest of them ~~ also aem is a pain to install it usses a diffrent turbo inlet pipe,

for some reason my AEM intake and TBE caused the boost to bump up to 25-26 psi

I had no problems whatsoever installing my AEM intake...fitment was perfect.

The only issue I have with the AEM is the opening around where the MAF pipe feeds into the airbox...the seal around the pipe is not that great.

I used some foam insulation to make a better seal.

Without the cover on, the air suction noise and BOV is louder. As loud or louder than a plain open air cone filter, that I don't know. I put the cover back on because water tends to end up on the tip of the filter from my opened hood vent when i wash the car.

Any thoughts on the K&N? It looks like a good combo between open filter and air-from-airbox setup?

Without the tune and just intake, does AEM lean out AFR a lot? I'm planning to get the intake first then tune once I get the exhaust after board season is done.

How loud does it get? BOV sound noticeable inside & outside of the car?

I always wondered if that would be an issue with open filter intakes. How much water did you notice accumulated at the tip of the filter?

Just a bit, but I guess if you go with an open filter don't "open up" the driver side hood vent.

Yeah I don't plan on opening up the driver side hood vent. I did a small test and poured a bit of water through the hood vent, and it will just miss the filter, so i think it should be okay.

This is incorrect. Check on K&N's site. They have run numerous tests proving this myth invalid.

And I beg to differ with K&N.

I've seen many photos and read numerous threads on how people cleaned had their K&N filters, then over-oiled the filter causing issues with their MAFs.

With my AEM filter, all I do is clean it, then let it dry.
