Turbo question
Turbo question
I was having a discussion with a coworker about turbos. I'm not 100% sure about this but all the evos I've owned I've noticed that our cars warm up earlier. Is it because the water/oil line runs through the turbo and warms up faster? I was just curious about the theory.
Generally all newer cars use a 'warm up' period to heat your converter up to operating temp asap at start up. Higher idle among other things are programmed to do this. Basically the sooner your engine and cat warms up ultimately the less emissions you produce.
I guess it's been so long since I've owned a non turbo car it seems like mine still takes a good 5 minutes in the winter to get up to full temp. Seems to take less time after getting on the expressway compared to local roads but I can't imagine it taking longer. There are indeed quite a few warmup mode engine tuning parameters active to get the car to operating temperature as quickly as it can. You can heat it up a bit faster by getting into boost but honestly that's not such a good idea until you are at 150* F or higher. Personally I try and stay under 10 psi until I reach those temps an never go WOT until I've hit 170* F.
