please help O2 sensor dethreaded
please help O2 sensor dethreaded
Some amateur shop guys damaged the thread of my O2 sensor that goes in the cat while taking it off the car.
Now my question is can I have it welded and get rid of the CEL light and fill the hole in the cat??
thanks a lot

Hes probably not an amateur , its damn hard to get that thing out without cross threading it, the guys at my shop told me if I weld it it will ruin it due to the high heat, but who knows, you could try and if it doesn't work get a new 1, bad thing is they are 300 something dollars. You can get a bolt to fill the hole temporarilly

For sure you need to have that shop man up and fix the problem that they caused. With that said I just did the same thing to my O2 sensor when I swapped in a HFC but with the help of the some internet searching I was able to fix mine. The threads on the sensor were pretty jacked up but I went and got a small file set at Harbor Freight for $8. I used the file with the sharpest edge to cleanup the threads. It took about 30 minutes to do but the sensor went back in just fine with antiseize and a little more effort than clean threads would take.
BTW, if you ever have to remove an O2 sensor, the advice floating out there is to do it before the exhaust cools down too much. Metal does expand and contract with heat so doing this while everything is still hot might help. Just make sure you are wearing appropriate safety gear so you don't burn yourself.

You could always get a die and chase the threads. But honestly, save yourself the work and have the shop cover it. They were the ones who screwed it up so they are responsible.
well the shop told me (touge factory IL) that it was already messed up by the dealer earlier which I don't believe
I did had the cat replaced at the dealer due to rattle they changed the cat but might have used the same O2 sensor?
