Clutch broke... help?

Yesterday my clutch broke. Sitting at a stop light in nuetral, when I pushed the clutch pedal in there was a loud snap and the pedal fell to the floor. Felt and sounded like the pedal broke or something. Pedal would not come back up. Inspected the pedal and didnt find anything that was broken inside the car. Pedal will either stay on the floor or in the up position due to the spring on the assembly. However, will not dis-engage the clutch. There is a puddle of hydrolic/clutch fluid leaking from the assembly on the fire wall behind the brake boost assembly. Also looks like there is a some leakage from a rubber nipple looking device under neath the stearing column on the firewall in the engine bay. Its not from inside the clutch itself but from the hydrolics that operate it. Did not see any parts on the road that may have fell off.

Have the exedy stage 2 clutch that was installed by a clutch shop. Will be calling them tomorrow.

Has this happened to anyone or does anyone know what happened? I will start tearing into it tomorrow so any input would be helpful. Thanks!

Check out the ssp master cylinder. I have it + exedy stage 2 and the combo feels great, so much easier to drive. The stock MC is too weak for a clutch like the exedy stage 2.

Get the SSP because installing another stock master will just break again.

Sspperformance.com order online or call, great customer service btw. IMO if your upgrading your clutch it's a good idea to get the ssp mc.

From the reading that I have done over the past couple days, it appears to me that upgrading the master cylinder should be done if you do anything more than an OEM or equivelant upgrade to your clutch. Seems like an easy fix to prevent being stranded somewhere... But I am by not an expert on clutches. Just my observations.

I wonder if this is a problem with newer X's? I've got 30k miles on my car and 20 of those are on a 6 puck ACT clutch. No issues with the MC.

That's what im worried too.. but as a college student, im pretty on budget.. so another 350$ on a MC is another lil thing I have to squeeze out. I read here n there ppl break their MC, but not sure how many total numbers out there or their style of driving.. some people burn clutches under 10k..

It's mostly about driving style I am sure. Also if you get too strong of a pressure plate that will lead to failure too.

I am still on the stock one, I have an SSP waiting to be installed though in case. It's going in with the new clutch regardless though.

I drive mine as a comuter... I goof off in it on occasion but it has never been launched and I do know how to drive a manual transmission. I guess the bottom line is that the car is not abused. I replaced my clutch to the exedy stage 2 at about 20k miles. I did it because i did not like the stock clutch. It still had plenty of life left in it. Had I known about this master cylinder business it woud have been replaced when I did the clutch. Hind sight is always 20/20!

This is exactly what happened to me 2 days ago in the middle of a freakin highway. Called AMS for an opinion and they did say it was most prolly the master cylinder and they even recommended checking out the SSP upgrade.
