Input shaft rattling noises?

Hey guys,

Well ive been having some noises after i got my ACT clutch/street flywheel, that i thought was chutter. The noise is a rattling sound when im cruising in gear and let off the gas to decelerate. The sound goes away when i push in the clutch and comes back once i let off the clutch. After some research im almost positive its the input shaft and not chutter. My question is, should i be worried and prepare for to buy a new input shaft or will i be okay (it seems to be common?)

Thanks guys!

how does one differentiate between input shaft noise and flywheel chatter? sounds like flywheel chatter to me...

the input shaft is either aligned or not... if it is not aligned you won't get the trans back on. even if the input shaft somehow developed some sloppyness, I can't imagine it lasting very long...

If it is flywheel chutter, finally peace in mind.. Does anyone experience other weird sounds from the flywheel? For example, when i was logging my car, from 2k-3k, i hear a echoing/ringing sound.. Sometimes it happens, and sometimes it doesn't (or maybe i dont notice it)..

I am still on stock clutch/pp/flywheel on my X, but on other cars where I have had aftermarket clutches (1G DSM, 1.8T Jetta, Evo VIII), there was always some new noise to get accustomed to after the upgrade. some of the times it will change, lessen, or go away entirely. I believe some clutch assemblies are even known to cause "phantom" knock.

AMS even has this verbage on their website:
"Engine vibrations can cause a rattle in the intermediate separator plate when the clutch is disengaged. This rattle will in no way affect the performance of the Exedy Multi Plate Clutch. This noise is well accepted in the performance industry when multi plate clutches are used."

obviously that is specific to Exedy multi-plate clutches, but really it applies to most aftermarket clutches, particularly when switching from a dual-mass flywheel to a single-mass one.

good luck, keep an eye/ear on it; never hurts to be cautious/aware.

I have a Evo 8, but like you I'm on ACT clutch and light flywheel. I hear rattles similar to you when I'm cruising or at idle with the clutch out, but if I depress the clutch the rattle goes away.

At first I was under the impression it maybe the throw out bearing.
