Clutch Shudder/ Chattering

Hey fellas,

So in the past week (about 4 days) I have noticed that my clutch is making a chattering/shudder sound. It's very faint and begins when I engage the clutch.

Some things I've noticed.

- Car is running at normal temp when it occurs
- When in neutral, I engage clutch, no noise
- When driving, changing gear, each time I engage the clutch, I can hear the faint chattering/shudder
- I have held the clutch down while in gear and it keeps chattering/shuddering until I let go

I've read otter's 'Trans Rattle..' thread as well as some others as well as online material, and from what I gather it could be:

-throw out bearing
-input shaft
-worn out clutch
-oil on the clutch
-warped clutch/flywheel
-clutch hose loose

I currently have 23,000kms on the clock. Car is running fine, no grinds, engaging into all gears in perfect.

Will be taking her to the mechanic tomorrow before I goto the track on Sunday. Is this case of shutter/chattering a serious problem, especially before the track?

Please discuss. Thanks guys.

IMO, taking a car to the track that is having clutch issues is asking for bigger problems.
But you gotta be the judge of that. Hard to tell how bad the problem is over the interweb.
See what the mechanic says. If something is warped or going bad, personally I would get it fixed before track time.
Oil on the clutch or a worn clutch disc wouldn't be too big of an issue.....it would just slip. And the heated oil would smell.

If oil is actually on the clutch disc, would that oil erode/ disappear after a while?

If the mechanic says it's definitely the clutch is going or similar, I'll have to miss out on the track

I honestly think that clutch chatter is normal for our OEM clutch. Mine chattered, particularly bad when cold, since about 15k miles, and I know plenty of other people have chatter on the OEM clutch, as well. I took my OEM clutch out at around 88,000 miles, and it looked near new, barely any wear. I was able to adjust my driving style so I almost never got any chatter, you may have to do the same.

^ Yeah, after searching on here I've noticed the same with a few of us.

Funny thing is, there were two scenarios.

1: Chattering when cold (your case)
2. Chattering when warm (my case)

For me, I understand the chattering going up hills, clutch can slip - fair enough, but on a straight and chattering, weird.

I'll goto the mechanic anyway to see whats up.

Thanks for altering the spelling, cheers!

uphill and chattering? your pressure plate doesn't have enough pressure to keep the clutch engaged because you are on an uphill? what the hell kind of hills do you have in australia man?

Okay went to the mechanic and he has diagnosed the following:

- No chatter on idle.
- Can't be the clutch or the box.

When the car is moving it makes the chatter sound, but the very moment we hit the brakes slightly or hard just to be sure, it stops each time. To be more sure we picked up speed and the chatter went to the speed we went. The faster we went the louder the chatter picked up and vice versa.

Time to take the wheels off, sounds like its coming from the front. Will take a look further and update. See if I can find anything out of the ordinary, loose or what not. So glad its not the box or the clutch, phew. Gives me hope for the track though I will need my suspension to be at 100%!

This car's P plate sux *****, as clearly found out by myself...Mine was bent in in the diafragm, and it had NO pressure left on it at only 50 k miles when I finally took it apart...and it had been doing it since close to 40 k

Since my ACT the only chatter I get is when setting off to go and I launch a bit harsh

When we (RPW) swapped out my clutch the centre bearing? was very worn but the clutch itself was pretty good - but I still had some clutch slippage even tho the clutch was good..

Now that I have a better clutch better flywheel I could not be happier it has now worn in and you can really feel the difference between the stock setup vs the A/M one

As for suspenssion look at the Teins Super Street ( the Australian verssion) there is a difference between the Aussie ones vs the U.S also have an even closer look at the KSports these have more settings to choose from than the Teins
