Cam install- P0017 code

Hello All,

Installed GSC S2 cams and retuned around Thanksgiving. Got a few, fuel rich bank one codes and only one P0017 (exhaust cam phase).

I have driven alot miles on the car reving upto 8100 and at this point if anything is misaligned I would be rebuilding the engine.

Fast forward to January I would consistently get the P0017 code and will return after 2 start ups after I clear it.

I have removed the covers and rechecked everything. Torque on all cam caps. And of course the timing marks are spot on! Dots on gears correspond with the timing links on the chain. The timing marks are aligned and perfectly level with the cylinder head.

Assuming everything is MECHANICALLY fine is there anyone out there with experience with this code and would have a fix?

Could it be a sensor? Is it a setting in the tune?

The car feels fantastic but seeing that check engine light is making sick to my stomach if you know what I mean.

p0017 code "starts"with cam shaft position sensor.

the end of the line for that code is the oil control solenoid.

on my car..... ended up replacing the oil control valves.

do not know if they were actually "bad"........

.........but the ECU thought they were.

Thanks for your response. A few quick questions if you or anyone can answer.

- How long was your car reading this code before you replaced the oil control valves?

- How can one test the valve mechanically for faultiness?

- Was that replacement the complete fix for your situation?

- How much did a replacement part cost?

Thanks in advance.

Still open to other possible fixes...

mine was done under warranty. car was running great , but kept popping that code

you could start by swapping the cam-shaft position sensors..

from intake side to exhaust side.

....then re-setting the ECU.

see if the next time you get the code , you get it for "intake position sensor".

if so. then it would mean just that sensor is bad. that is a possibility.

Great diagnostic tip. I wasn't sure the sensors were the same. Will do the swap tomorrow. Thanks.

Swapped the sensors. Cleared the P0017 code. And now a P0300 (random misfirm detected) came up. Cleared that too. Disconnected the battery for good measures. Interested to see what I get tomorrow.

I am trying to eliminate every possible mechanical ill before submitting the car to my tuner. Which now i'm suspecting it may be in the tune. Or a very small portion of my tune.

One thing to note, my idle at times dips below 500 and stumbles and bumbles at 100 increments up to 1100 or so then settles down to 900ish. Which is the symptoms of a P0300.

Is it possible at these times the ecu is going haywire trying to prevent the car not to stall? If so what parameters needs to be examined in the tune? Any tuners out there please feel free to chime in.

07outty thanks for mrntioning the sensor swap!

On the2014 Evo this was not related to the install. There was no air in the MIVEC. Mechanically the car was 100% fine. The dealer just had to do a relearn on the MUT tool and all was perfect after.

What exactly are they doing for a re-learn on the MUT tool to account for a new set of cams? I still get this error one in a blue moon, mostly when the engine is really cold from sitting outside and the oil change is in the last 500-1000 miles of life.

The stumbling idle is likely when the exhaust cams are going full retard and/or the intake cams are going full advance.

To be honest, I was not there when he used the MUT tool. I can tell you it drove me crazy. I went as far as switching cams from Kelford to GSC... Same code. Long story short, the dealer had it relearned in an hour. Needless to say, I was pissed for doing all the extra work...lol

Now, if you installed dual valve springs and the oil pressure is not capable of keeping the exhaust cam at 0 degrees at idle, that is an entirely different issue. If you are seeing a requested EX Cam at 0 and the actual EX Cam is 30... You have a mechanical issue to address.

I've been getting the 0016 constantly on my '10...do have kelford 214a cams. Shop has checked chain, cams and timing. Everything is spot on. They did mention a recall re flash by mitsubishi for 0016/0017 issues. I would need to hit up a dealer for that flash to overwrite that setting then get re flashed w current tune..see if that is the fix.

How easy is it to swap sensors?

same isssue with hard code P0017, soft code P0016

All

I am having this issue as well. I just had my Tomei 280 cams, with valve springs and retainers. I had a new timing chain, and tensioner installed thinking it was the problem. NOPE! the hard code P0017 keeps coming back. I believe that is the exhaust side. I have a new sensor coming tomorrow hoping its the problem. What else could this be????? HELP!!!! Car runs perfect with the engine light off and on. no performance issues.
