You beat me to posting up the link. How slow am I?

Three-Speed is developing a scattershield for the Evo X. It is a long overdue piece in the realm of safety for the car. Most of the time we wait for the finished product to hit the shelves.

The more I see the range of cars affected by a clutch or flywheel explosion the more you realize that there is no car immune to having this happen to them.

Harry at Three-Speed builds some nice stuff. I am looking forward to the finished product.

Same here. This is what I found:

"Although the condition is rare, high-powered drag race cars can suffer from catastrophic flywheel failure. This stainless steel scatter shield is designed to shield the driver and car from flying pieces of flywheel in the event of a flywheel failure."

If the car gets quick enough, NHRA rules will require it. The point of it is to protect the driver of the car from a flywheel explosion. It's the kind of thing that when it happens is so catastrophic that no matter how rare, rules require it at a certain point. An exploding flywheel/pressure plate assembly can literally cut the driver into pieces.

That is a very good question and we get that lot.

Click on the following link. It is photo album of flywheels, pressure plates, and clutch discs failing and the damage they can do. We feel a picture is worth a thousand words.

There are videos and pictures documenting the aftermath of not running a scattershield.

The main reason is safety.
The other reason is recovery cost. If I happen to blow up a flywheel or a clutch the event manages to shred half of the engine bay, the hood and surrounding pieces. It goes from buying a new clutch flywheel and bell housing into a couple thousand dollars and some work from the body shop. It is cheap investment to put a shield on to contain the fallout.

It doesn't just equate to drag racing, but that is the most prevalent place the cameras are rolling with high horsepower and lightened flywheels.

Of course then there is this fool doing a burnout in his driveway while he still has a plastic bag for a window.

This happened to a buddy of mine, the flywheel didnt explode per say, but it managed to detach itself and sliced a perfect little slot in his CF hood. Before it exited the engine bay it shredded nearly every harness and hose in there and cracked the intake manifold.

This occurred on a nearly stock motor too, he sued Mitsu and they gave him a brand new car with some monetary compensation as well.

wow, what a f***ing retard! ATTEMPTING to do a burnout in his p.o.s. neon with mix-matched wheels (probably tires too), plastic window, and damaged hood (before his clutch exploded)

I bought this a while back and the fitment is great. I do remember needing some bolts that were specific to the EVO.

I have had my clutch explode in my RSX. It happened driving on the highway, as I downshifted to pass a slow driver. Luckily nothing serious happened, the springs came out and tore up the engine block, the trans housing, I had to replace the flywheel and (obviously) the clutch. It could have been worse though.

Thank you.

We learned early on that Mitsubishi decided to make two different castings for the X bell housing. One of the casting was only used for two weeks! But since there is no way for us to know which you have we include a custom machined spacer and OEM bolt to make installation a snap for either version.
