fp green or red?

so i've red so many posts saying how great both of these fp products are, im just trying to see if i can narrow down what i should go for. i'm hoping to find a good spooling turbo for occasional autox but that can still come through during time attack and spirited challenging on the freeway. ive heard red is a huge gain in top end potential but not so great in the lowend spool. and i haven't heard much about the green. can the green pull out a top end win racing through our tunnel (3/4 mile). feed back from owners/tuners would be awesome!

i am not an owner of an FP turbo, but i have done extensive reading on them.

the Green will be better for racing like AutoX, but it still falls off on top like the stock turbo.

the red will be better up top like you have said, but i have read from so many FP turbo owners, if you want the Red, you might as well get the Black, as the black has only a tiny bit more lag than the red, but has wayyyy more punch

I heard that the FPRed surges a lot on spool up on stock cams. Can some FPRed owners chime in on this?

I'm kinda in the same position as the OP. already have a stock donor turbo ready to go, just can't decide between the green and the red.

Between red and black, all else being equal, the black isn't "just a tiny bit" more lag. There's a stock block black recently posted in the dyno forum that came out of AMS, he didn't make full boost till 4.6k... A 2k powerband is only good for straight line racing... Everyone seams to look at murlo's red vs black, but you can't really compare his setup. He went from a bolt on red to a built block, cams, and head porting (not sure on the porting) black, ofcourse it'll spool better with a built engine...

My red never surged...but I didn't have stock cams. I doubt that would matter though.

To me its all about what your power goals are.

Pick a goal and buy the turbo that you need to get there. The bigger power you want the more lag. People make this harder than it really is sometimes.

^local red owner had the turbo with stock cams and kelford cams (not sure which one). And he said it stopped surging after the headwork

My fpred setup had no headwork, just cossie cams.

And we had some rather aggressive mivec on there for super quick spool on E85...still no surge.

Regardless, the decision is simple. We have enough of a database to know what turbos can/can't make for the most part.

So you have to either pick lag for a bigger turbo for future upgrades. Or pick a goal and pick the turbo that suits that power goal with the least lag possible (aka some stock frame).

You can't have your cake and eat it to when selecting turbos, if you want more power you get more lag

its not really the lag I'm worried about, I can live with red amount of lag. I just don't wanna have any surge issues. and I don't really wanna do cams, cause if I do that, I might as well get the head ported, and if I pull the head I might as well get the block built, and if I do that I might as well get a stroker, and if I do that I might as well get a black, and before I know it, I'm 10k+ into a build...

Hmm... I have a red and I believe all of the new ones have anti-surge ports. I don't think you need to worry about surge. I'm on stock cams for a few more weeks then going with GSC S2 cams, but I haven't had any issues with surging. I'm happy with my red. I do miss the quick spool up, but when it hits I remember why I bought this turbo.

I do go to the strip every once in a while, but I want to do road race events.

Bluex when are you spooling and what are you pushing awhp while still on stock cams?

My last tuner had it spoolin' at 4100 rpm and I was making 350 awhp @ 25 psi. My IDC was at 110%! This was on a Mustang Dyno.

Since then I found someone else to help tune, but it has been road tunes. Spool up is at 3800 rpm and I'm at 29 psi with IDC at 85%! I'll wait to go to the dyno after head studs, gasket, cams, springs/retainers, and tubular exhaust manifold.

I love my red but top end pull could be better. I start spooling around 3800 and hit 470 hp about 4700. I have a new toxic fab tubular manifold waiting to go in, so I hope that will open up the top end.

There is also the MAP EF series turbos. They seem to be similar in price but from whati have seen, more power. check out Kracka's Dyno thread. Just and idea also.
