Rear differential? clutch slipping *need help plz*
Rear differential? clutch slipping *need help plz*
Hey there, problems again
I had countless problem with this car.
Seems like the guy from who I bought it beated the crap out of it even for is low 20 000miles.
I just recently had the center differential , with pins and case fixed up because everything was thashed. When I got the car back (2month later) I was so happy, I waited a bit for the tranny to 'break-in' then after a few days I floored it, immediately I heard some noise (something spinning hitting something until decelerating and finaly come to a stop). I then found that it was comming from the back passenger side. I remembered from the mitsu inspection for the tranny that the guy told me there was some fluid spilling from the rear axle. (not actually spilling but I don't know the word for almost nothing).
So now I went to a mechanic had him listen to it and it seems it's the clutch from the rear ?lsd? I don't know exactly wich part, I'm a little bit lost with all these.
The fluid level is fine, after re listening to the sound now knowing that it is, it really looks like a clutch trying to grip and slipping, then disengaging slipping again.
Anyone had this problem ? I'm the kind of guy that says if it break replace with better. Does it worth to upgrade if such part exist ? (since I don't even know the exact part name ...)
Do you guys think there might be other parts broken or that will could break soon ?
Now at least I can roll, but if I go slow (below 40mph)and accelerate hard it will make the noise, also if I shift fast, or brake hard.
I need to have it fixed soon because I've got personnal problems and need to go to the hospital (not for myself) often.
Thanx

Nope, no parts available from Mitsubishi, it's a non-service item and I don't know of anyone making parts for the rear diff.
What would be good is being able to swap out the stupid AYC rear torque transfer diff for the straight mechanical rear diff like you get in the Evo X RS. That's a common thing to do with the VIII, IX's but it's not just that simple as just replacing the housing, brackets, shafts and centre and expecting it to work on the X. You can blame ASC for that.
IF you could swap over to a mechanical rear diff it would be a LOT stronger.

Which complications are you talking about?
Bryan, I'd love to know more about the two X's running VIII rear diffs, could you PM me the details? I'd love to know how much or little of the carrier was modified, what carrier brackets were used, what shafts and what diff centre. ( I would have thought the VII centre and shafts would be the go as they are the strongest)
I don't know of one Evo X GSR in Japan or Australia that runs anything apart from a hyrdaulic transfer diff, I do know of one in NZ and another in the UK but they basically did a complete swap of everything from an RS, so I'd be very interested to know what was done so I can do it.
As for why it wont like it, having tried to before with numerous AYC and ABS errors, the MUT3 having a hissy fit and the rear brakes locking up, that was enough to shelve the idea, but I need to revist this for our time attack car, RTR TA-1.
Simply put the AYC diff is fine for road duties, but for serious track usage with a light and powerful car and sticky R-spec tyres, it starts to become an issue, with a pro driver it's worse making the AYC diff is prohibitive for decent lap times with all the 'pig rooting' and carry on. If we could easily go to a mechanical diff from an 8, that would be awesome. (also the Ralliart supertraction rear diff centre for the X fits the 8 carrier, so happy days, It'll just need some taper roller bearings, some preload adjustment and voila)

I believe it is rear axles and drive shaft and some other magic potions....
I would ask Ryan Gates, as he is one of them. The other I am tuning here soon so I might be able to get more details, or run into the same problem you are.
I'm curious why the Ralliart can use the normal mechanical rear diff but still have ASC. Although it is a little bit of a different ASC then the X I suppose.
There is a heap of differences between RA an X, enough to get a bag of errors hehe . I'd need to look at my scribblings of a crazed man from when I was doing this, from memory even the ABS units from X to RA differ.
In any case, fitting a mech rear diff from a X RS to a GSR will fit perfectly, but it's not just a case of blanking off lines and moving on like it is on the CT9A pletform.

Bryan, the rear RS diff does differ to the RA. It's a sunday so I don't have the part numbers even remotely close but I'll see what I can do.
kyoo, for the record Cusco do a rear diff for the X too, in fact they have two types but it's just the diff centre, so the rear diff remains a hydraulic torque transfer diff in activation. Useless for motorsport.

Hummm, so since it's a non serviceable item I need to replace the whole thing ?
Or can I 'just' buy something like the cusco lsd wich is 1400 bucks and it will correct my clutches problem ? Sorry I know it's newbish but I don't really know the different parts in it.
Note . The RA is supposed to use the 4wd system of the evo 8/9, but I don't know exactly what in practice it means.
