VTA bov running rich

I decided to test the theory of running a VTA bov without a being tuned for it, and have some questions in regards to this for those of you who have done it.

I find no issues with idle at all.

Between shifts, the car does go rich, but any more excessive than it does with the recirc setup.

However, since installing the BOV, I find that the car is running quite a bit more rich, and is throwing alot more black smoke when on the throttle, and it seems to me that it is getting worse as time goes on. A/F's on my gauge run low 10's pretty regularly with moderate to high load, which it has always done with any of the OTS cobb tunes I have run, but the amount of smoke is quite a bit more evident. I am going to throw the stock BOV back in the car to see if it clears up a bit.

Mods:

Cobb AP with Stage II 91 octane tune
Greddy SE cat back
Ichiba test pipe with wideband setup
ETS intake
NISEI UICP

It does not seem to be. It is pulling full boost, and tapering as it should.

I was doing some more thinking about this. I also recently had all of the relays updated to the 2011 relays, including the fuel relays. I am wondering if this might be causing the rich conditions and extensive smoke. I am going to reset the battery, and see if that gets me anywhere.

There are two reasons for testing the VTA bov. Since there is so much controversy over running a VTA bov over a recirc setup, I wanted to see for myself if it actually causes the idling issues, and super rich conditions between shifting that everybody thinks it does.

Secondly, like most, I wanted to make more noise than the stock BOV.

I am running OTS mapping at the moment because I will be going further with my mods, and don't want to waste the money on a tune, only to have it tuned again in the spring. I will be going with an FP red, 1100 injectors, FMIC, fuel pump, and a DP. I also already own a Perrin ECBS that I will install at that time also. That will probably be the end of my mods.

Now, this morning I reset my ECU, and put about 100 miles on the car today. The smoke is gone (well, as much as it could be while running an OTS Cobb map). Therefore, the issue that I was having was not BOV related, and was probably related to the swap in fuel relays. I also read on some other posts that others have had the same issue when swapping out the relays.

Had a TialQ vta welded into my buschur SS licp by Akuma via no choice.
With my setup there was a stock bov problem where the tubing wouldn't reach.
That's why I get for mix and matching part manufacturers at a bargain price

Other then one of tubes on the intake being plugged and looking a little weird it runs perfect.

Got tuned and I have absolutely 0 problems.
It gives off a nice loud whip cracking sound even under the slightest boost.
Love it.

Here are a few pics of what I had done. The images are huge so you have to click em.

I blame the design of the LICP

How it looks today... Notice something missing?

i'm pretty sure what you did when you installed the bov and made it vta, you didn't reset the ecu? anyways, right now your ecu did a "learning" and now know how much air is exactly going in, that's why it helped a bit. but if you log your AFRs you will still be on the rich side due to that OTS is tuned for a recirc type of bov, which is giving some air in the intake.

when you get tuned in the future, there wont be any problems. btw as long as you know what you're doing then there is nothing wrong with running vta (at least for the X). i'm running vta as well because of my setup. i've been on vta for 2 years already for my x.
