AMS 2.2 possible problem... smoke vapors from the head
ok guys i need you thoughts...
i've got a shortblock from ams and its in my car for the breakin period running at 3.5k limiter for almost 1000miles now with no pressure ever build to the motor!
today pull the hoses from the valvecover that goes to the catch can (it vents to the air with the returning line to the intake manifold and turbo inlet tapped) and in one of them i saw that it continuously vents smoke (oil vapors)!! is this correct??
can you actually see the oil vapors in your car as they come out?
i've been told that something like that could be done if the are a lot of tollerance in the block and its kind of normal.... but since now i knew that if actual smoke comes out of the vapor lines and dipstick tube... there is a piston cracked or ring falure... anyway i'm not so sure about the X's engine habits so i'll need your imput in this before i decide to open my new engine AGAIN!!...
we took a compression test and all the cylinders show 150psi (like 500miles ago that i did the test again), NO sign of oil in the exhaust or the plugs and no audible at least piston slap.....
could this thing be done by a bad headgasket (cosworth) or even a head compoment failure (seals.guides etc)?? if that was the case shouldn't the compression test readings be screwed up?
please help!

I would contact AMS directly and see what information they are able to provide you with. Did you purchase this directly from them or from someone else? Did you open up this new engine after you received it? If so, what did you do to it when it was open? Your wording is a little misleading so I'm just asking to make sure.
I think 150psi on a freshly built motor is pretty low, I could be wrong though as I do not know what average is for a 4b11, but I know most freshly built Mustang motors I have done tests on were in the 180+ range
These are relatively low compression motors, not normally aspirated mustang engines. The compression numbers should be lower than a normally aspirated engine.
the best thing if you have concerns, to contact with a seller. He will provide more info or will direct you with your problem to the right guy from AMS.
That is the right way to do it, and probably the shortest also...

Although annoying (I know, mine does the same), it looks like its normal. Most aftermarket builds have some bypass and shows up on a vented catch can. Since yours was diverted to the turbo inlet, you never saw it. JMO.

vivid responded very very quickly to find a solution for my problem i must say!
the engine builder said that this is normal and since there is no combustion oil smoke in the exhaust and with the compression test successful there is not likely a piston failure or something...
They also send me the full build specs of my block, i saw that they used .0043 to .0047 wall to piston clearance so maybe this is the cause of the lot of vapors... i know that more clearance is used for high power engines builds so i guess this numbers are fine...

Why not contact with AMS directly or as its been offered from VIVID with them?
On the internet anybody can be anything behind a screen name or title... As many many times you will or you did experience that. The best way to solve your concerns are all listed above. Contact either Vivid or AMS. That is The ONLY way you will solve your issues.
End of the day , even if something wrong you have to go back to them right? If there is no problem, still they are the one, who can tell you everything about they OWN product regarding your concerns.

I am sure my bad english, but for me didnt come down like that at all. Seemed to me you are asking people around first about your concern, before you actually talk to them.
Vivid racing did contact us with these question and concerns that their customer had right away. We supplied them with the build sheet and specs for this particular block.
The smoke is normal and there is no need for concern.
Enjoy the 2.2L shortblock
