The filters should be interchangeable, yes.

Have you ever bought an evo 8/9 filter and tried it?

Why would K&N make two filters for the evo x when they are the same kind of filter?

http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=HP-1004 part # HP-1004

check it out, at the bottom it has what the filter is compatiable with. No other evos are listed.

This one is for an 2006 evo, different part #. Says it will fit newer lancers but not newer evos.

DSM/8/9/X OEM Mitsu oil filters are all interchangeable. I have personal experience with that.

The relief valve is the same PSI, the thread specs are the same, the rubber seal diameter is the same. These are the only specs that truly matter as long as the canister dimensions physically fit in the engine bay. Many people run physically larger oil filters to get extra capacity/more filtering media. Hell, my friend runs an Amsoil oil filter designed for a diesel truck on his Prius for the extra capacity and filtering media.

All that said, the first few oil changes on my X were done with OEM Mitsu Evo IX oil filters that I had leftover.

The evo 8/9 filter is 12 mm (almost a half of an inch) smaller in diameter than the evo X filter.

Rubber seal diameter the same? I do not think so. The seal diameter is related to the O.D. Assuming the distance between the outside of the filter to the seal (o-ring) are about the same, the distance is about an half of an inch different.

Canister dimensions don't affect actual fitment. Nearly all oil filters designed for any model Mitsubishi are interchangeable. Remember the tiny OEM Mitsu oil filter for the 2G DSM? Most 2G guys started running the fatter 1G filters instead. Why? The canister physically fit, the thread specs were the same, the rubber seal diameter was the same, and the bypass valve was the same spec.

I feel like we're going in circles here over something incredibly simple.

Dude, why don't you just get the OEM filter instead of going through all this hassle. I've the ran OEM filter for 58k+ miles in my 2008 X and it's worked FLAWLESSLY. Don't make this harder than it has to be.

If you don't want to run the OEM filter, then just get whatever K&N (or whatever brand you want) recommends. It's not that hard.

If the diameter is the same, then the filter can be used as long as it has the same thread and pitch and relief valve pressure. When you decrease the diameter, the location at where the filter is suppose to seal changes.

Not necessarily. The seal is the same size on all DSM & Evo, and the majority of other Mitsubishi, oil filters. Like I've said twice already, I have used Evo IX oil filters on my Evo X.

A vendor sold me a K&N evo 8/9 oil filter(HP-1010) and told me it will fit. I tried to install it and it does not fit. So i went to the local auto parts store and bought an evo X K&N filter (HP-1004). I compared the two and they were different in height and diameter. The evo 8/9 filter did not mount in the proper location (did not cover the shinny, smooth surface).
