Mine just started idling funny two days ago and the service engine soon light came on. Could this be my problem...going to the dealer tomorrow...

Has there been any kind of consensus reached on whether this is a wear-induced thing or a manufacturing defect? Part of me wants to replace mine often in case it's a wear thing, but then another part of me is worried about throwing away a set that's stood up fine to be replaced with a possibly faulty plug...

Its not a parts defect, or wear issue I've been through about 8, o always keep 2 spare on my car.
I had brand new ones go and older ones.
Just avoid the limiter in the 1 to 2nd.

2010 x mr tuned.

Wow, this is scary with so many cases; it's like Russian Roulette! Are there different temperature plugs that others have tried with success, or is detonation just too much stress for the plugs?

So, got my car back from the dealer yesterday and it was indeed one of the plugs...i had them all replaced and the service guy said that my injectors could be bad and that may have cause the issue...seeing as i don't have money for a whole new set of injectors at the moment i told him to leave them...BUT drove it home and later that night i drove it somewhere else and the light came back on but its not idling funny anymore....anyone have any ideas on what it could be????

I'd be wary of what a dealer tells you unless it's someone at the dealer you really know and trust. Pull the codes and find out exactly if it might have anything that may be caused by faulty injectors. You might be able to see symptoms of fuel problems through logging too. I'd run the gas down to less than a quarter tank and try some fuel injector cleaner in your gas first to see if that will clear anything up in case it's just a dirty injector.

5500 miles on my Stock 2013 MR. Car suddenly hesitated during acceleration. Anytime boost would build I could hear super loud detonation. I limped to work then to the dealer at which time the CEL came on (P0303) Turns out #3 Cylinder Spark Plug had come apart and the Electrode was lose. Compression was excellent all the way across. Spark plug replaced under warranty. All is well, car is back to normal. Surprising this would happen on a stock car with 5500 miles. Especially a 2013 model. I guess Mitsu still hasn't gotten to the bottom of this issue even after 5 years.

This problem has existed since 2008 and has usually been associated with tuned cars. We were just calling it something different back then. It's definitely a chicken or the egg question, but I personally don't blame defective spark plugs in all cases.

Not the same, but some info:

In the cases where it continues to happen on the same cylinder after plug replacements, it's clearly not a defective plug issue.

2011 stock, 45k miles and no problems, yet...I ordered a new set of HKS plugs to install this weekend just in case.

I've been using the 1 heat range colder HKS plugs with good success, although Kaizen Tuning warned me that they had failures with them as well. It might be due to how people are setting the gap on the plugs that might trigger a failure. The HKS plugs say not to touch the gap but with higher flowing turbo setups you have to bring the plug gap down to around .022" to avoid the spark from blowing out. I use the tap and check method versus bending it with a tool where you risk damaging the center electrode. Using a set of feeler gauges I get it done accurately and so far I've had good success with the HKS plugs that way.

The HKS plugs are over 100 bucks. Factory evo x plugs from mitsu are close to 100. Besides, iridium plugs should last way longer than 8k.

Rock Auto sells a set of 4 for about $41 shipped. I think MAP has a similar price too.

I changed mine at 30k and at 60k and they still looked great both times.

After 3000 miles ( first oil change) i always swapped the plugs to a HKS 40 or 45 plugs.
They never failed on me. Bullet proof plugs so far for me, even critical circumstances. Like when my fuel filter clogged up and tthe car ran super lean for a while until i got back to the service park. My exhaust was literally WHITE! We changed filter etc and check plugs, then go back for race worked like champ.

HKS is NGK plugs though.
